Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Thus have I heard: At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in the Bamboo Grove of Rājagṛha, together with a large Saṅgha of many monks and countless immeasurable Bodhisattvas, Mahāsattvas. Then, the venerable Pūrṇa, son of Maitrī, rose from his seat, arranged his upper robe over one shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and, with palms joined, turned towards the Blessed One and said to him: "Blessed One, I would like to ask a few questions; may the Tathāgata consider them with compassion and grant permission." The Blessed One replied: "Pūrṇa, son of Maitrī, ask whatever you wish. I will explain it correctly and satisfy your mind." The venerable Pūrṇa said: "Blessed One, today I ask for the sake of those Bodhisattvas, Mahāsattvas who have perfectly accomplished excellent qualities, whose fame is very high and far-reaching, and who constantly strive for the happiness of sentient beings." Then, the venerable Pūrṇa, son of Maitrī, asked in verse: Having perfectly accomplished excellent qualities, Fame is high and far-reaching, Pure in morality and delighting in Dharma, What conduct should I ask about? How does the mind engage in conduct? How is generosity widely given? How are sentient beings skillfully tamed? How is joyful mind constantly cultivated on the path? Again, Pūrṇa, son of Maitrī, said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, today I ask about such things for the sake of those noble beings, how does a Bodhisattva accumulate extensive learning like a great ocean?
