Chapter Twenty-Five: Prophecy of the Tirthikas Chapter Twenty-Five: Prophecy of the Tirthikas Then, at that time, other Tirthika practitioners, as well as the six teachers of wandering ascetics, Asuras, Garudas, daughters of Nagas, Kumbhandas, Gandharvas, Yakshas, Kinnaras, garland-bearing elephants, the retinues of the Four Great Kings, the Thirty-three Gods, the Gods of No Strife, the Gods of Tushita, the Gods of Paranirmitavasavartin, Brahma, the Gods of Clear Light, the Gods of Increasing Virtue, and the Gods of Great Fruit, also saw offerings and heard prophecies. They also heard the praises spoken by the gods of the Pure Abodes, and they were amazed and entered into the way of the Dharma. Having heard this way of the Dharma, which they had never heard before, they became doubtful. They hesitated and became uncertain, and then they said to the Blessed One: "O Gautama, having heard this Dharma that has never been heard before, we do not seek the abode of wandering ascetics, nor do we seek the abode of householders. Having heard this way of the Dharma that has never been heard before, we are hesitant and uncertain about this Dharma. Although our minds have not been interrupted, we still have faith in you, O Shramana Gautama. Why is that? Because you, O Shramana Gautama, have manifested such miraculous transformations. What kind of miraculous transformations have you manifested? We have seen this vast assembly of gods, and most of the assembly that is complete in every way knows that you, O Gautama, have spoken well, and they are delighted. Therefore, we have faith in you, O Shramana Gautama. O Gautama, we are very doubtful about what the gods of Great Fruit say, 'All dharmas are Tathagatas.' How can all dharmas be Tathagatas? O Shramana Gautama, if you could understand the meaning of our well-spoken words, eliminate the darkness, and rise from this seat, and teach us the Dharma in that way, we would have complete faith in you, O Shramana Gautama." As they were saying this, the Blessed One

Then, (Naada) said to the other heretical practitioners and wanderers: Wanderers, therefore I ask you, if you can bear it, answer truthfully! Well said, Shramana Gautama! Those wanderers listened to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said to them: Wanderers, how do you know about entering the womb? They replied: O Gautama, we have heard from the scriptures that three conditions must be met for conception to occur: both parents must have intercourse, the mother must be fertile, and after conception, desire must arise through various discriminations of desire, and then conception will occur. The Blessed One said: Wanderers, what do you think about this? When both parents discriminate, does it arise from a mind without desire? They replied: O Gautama, no. Does it arise from the mother's discrimination? O Gautama, no. Does it arise from the father's mind? O Gautama, no. Does it arise from the father's discrimination? O Gautama, no. Wanderers, what do you think about this? Does the father's desire enter the mother's womb? O Gautama, no. Wanderers, what do you think about this? Does the father's mind enter the mother's womb? O Gautama, no. Wanderers, what do you think about this? Does the father's discrimination enter the mother's womb? O Gautama, no. Wanderers, what do you think about this? Does the being dwelling in the womb die and transmigrate from the heavens into the mother's womb? O Gautama, we do not know. Wanderers, what do you think about this? Does the being dwelling in the womb die and transmigrate from the realm of humans, asuras, hell beings, animals, or the world of Yama into the mother's womb? O Gautama, we do not know. Wanderers, what do you think about this? Does the being dwelling in the womb, whether with form or without form, enter the mother's womb? O Gautama, we do not know.

Did your mother know when you entered the womb? Alas, Gautama, you know nothing! After they made this request, the Blessed One spoke these words to those other wandering non-Buddhists: Wanderers, this Dharma is profound and subtle, and it is to be understood by the wise, the knowledgeable, and the intelligent. It is beyond contemplation and not an object of contemplation; it is difficult to see and difficult to understand. Therefore, you who have long looked outward, admired outward, believed outward, strived outward, and dwelt in a state of outward observation, cannot understand it. Wanderers, however, a son or daughter of good family, relying on a virtuous friend who is like the Dharma, will develop an eye for the profound Dharmas. Wanderers, it is like this: for example, a person whose eye faculty is impaired, relying on a healing virtuous friend who is like the Dharma, will have their eye completely purified in this very life. That eye will also see forms in this very life. Wanderers, similarly, a son or daughter of good family, whose eye of wisdom has deteriorated, relying on a virtuous friend who is like the Dharma, will have their eye of wisdom completely purified. That person will also see the profound Dharmas. Wanderers, you too, because you have long looked outward, been deceived by inverted teachings, perceived what is not Dharma as Dharma, perceived what is not liberation as liberation, perceived what is not arising as arising, and been consumed by what is wasted. Wanderers, it is like this: for example, if a blind person leads a blind person, know that both the one who leads and the one who is led will suffer, not find happiness. Wanderers, similarly, whether it is a renunciate or a Brahmin, if someone who is not a teacher claims to be a teacher, someone who is not a perfectly complete Buddha claims to be a perfectly complete Buddha, someone who is not skilled in arising claims to be skilled in arising, someone who has not seen arising claims to have seen arising, and someone who is not a non-Buddhist claims to be a non-Buddhist.
