Fifth, the chapter requested by the great Kashyapa of the past. Fifth, the chapter requested by the great Kashyapa of the past. Then, the venerable Maha Kashyapa, having seen such a form of offering from the Asuras, was amazed and thought, "When the Tathagata practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past, what kind of roots of virtue did he accumulate to achieve such a ripened result?" At that time, with what kind of mind did he enter into samadhi, that he could remember countless kalpas, and that the Bhagavan, in the cycle of existence, in this and that life, accumulated what roots of virtue, and with what roots of virtue did he perfectly accomplish the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, and with what roots of virtue did he attain non-retrogression, all of which he could remember, abiding in such a samadhi. Then, the venerable Maha Kashyapa, having remembered the great roots of virtue of the Bhagavan, thought to himself, "If the Bhagavan has performed such great roots of virtue, even with just one aspiration, all the sentient beings dwelling in the worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges would obtain human bodies, and even if each sentient being made offerings as numerous as the offerings of the Asuras for as many kalpas as the sands of the Ganges, they would not be able to repay even one aspiration." Then, the venerable Maha Kashyapa arose from that samadhi, having obtained amazement and joy, and at that time, he praised the Bhagavan with verses: The capable one who strives for enlightenment, For each aspiration, This offering of the Asuras, Does not even slightly match, O Lion of Men. Such qualities are perfected, Worshipped by gods and humans, Sandalwood pillars like Mount Meru, O Best of Men, worthy of offering. Before you, O Lion of Men, sands of the Ganges, Extremely minute.

It is appropriate to offer small incense in the ocean filled with fragrance. For the one who possesses great merits, a mountain of flowers as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, it is appropriate to offer together in a vast area. The naturally formed excellent lamp, the heart of the lamp oil is like Mount Sumeru, it is appropriate to offer lamps with sesame oil as much as the water of the ocean. To such a one who possesses great power, who has reached the other shore of merits, it is appropriate to offer stupas of flowers as numerous as the sands of the Ganges. By offering to the king of men, compassion arises in the heart, the precious umbrella is vast, and it is appropriate to offer to the supreme sentient beings for countless eons. You possess infinite merits, with the precious victory banner, filling the ten directions of the world, it is appropriate to offer for countless eons. Lion among men, to you, for countless hundreds of millions of eons, it is appropriate to offer a multitude of banners as numerous as the sands of the Ganges. Great sage, tiger of eloquence, gods and humans, and all other sentient beings, please listen to the analogy of analysis and discernment. Suppose as many as the sands of the Ganges, all sentient beings in the realms of the ten directions become Buddhas, the supreme among men, possessing the ten powers, each of their heads also becomes as many as the sands of the Ganges, and each head has that many mouths, each mouth, the number of tongues and mouths are equal, even if praised for eons as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, it cannot satisfy the Buddhas, and cannot exhaust your merits. Such are the merits of the Buddhas, which have reached the other shore. At that time, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, well done! Well done! My disciples have become free, possess wisdom, have become Dharma, have become free, have become a measure, and dwell completely, they completely enter into my accumulation of merits. What is the reason for this? Monks, the Tathagata possesses immeasurable merits, possesses inconceivable merits. Monks, the merits of the Tathagata, and the other shore of the merits of the Tathagata, and the Tathagata

The collection of qualities is inconceivable. Monks, if the qualities of the Tathagata were to have form, then even the collection of qualities of each arising thought would not be able to be contained in a world system as numerous as the sands of the Ganges. Even the collection of qualities of each arising thought, as many Tathagatas as the sands of the Ganges, for as many eons as the sands of the Ganges, even if one were to count and measure this, one could not express it, one could not conceive it. Why is that? When the Tathagata formerly practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva, there was not a single thought that was gathered as a sentient being that was not generated for the benefit and happiness of all those sentient beings, however many there were. Because the realm of sentient beings is immeasurable, therefore the merit of as many sentient beings as there are arises from each arising thought of the Tathagata. The realm of sentient beings is inexhaustible. Just as the realm of sentient beings is inexhaustible, so too does inexhaustible merit arise from each arising thought of the Tathagata. That thought arises for the benefit of all sentient beings, so even if all sentient beings were to make offerings, they could not repay it. Why is that? The offerings of worldly people are accompanied by defilement, while the mind of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, arising for the benefit of all sentient beings, is to lead these sentient beings who are immersed in samsara to nirvana. How could they be immersed? Because there is no defilement. When the Tathagata formerly practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva, for the sake of sentient beings, he generated countless thoughts without defilement. Monks, in the past, in the past immeasurable eons, countless eons, inconceivable eons, unequaled eons, immeasurable eons, unspeakable eons ago, at that time, at that time, there was a Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, complete in knowledge and conduct, Well-Gone, Knower of the World, Tamer of Beings, Supreme, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, Bhagavan, named Lord Crown.
