Such Buddhadharma is upheld by the Tathagata's generosity of worldly possessions when practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past. Shariputra, a Bodhisattva who desires immortality, desires enlightenment, and desires nirvana should give worldly possessions. Shariputra, therefore, you should know that a Bodhisattva, dwelling in worldly possessions, can manifest complete and perfect enlightenment of unsurpassed and perfect Bodhi. Shariputra, in the past, during countless, immeasurable, boundless, and inconceivable eons, there appeared in the world a Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha named Dharma-rati, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Sugata, knower of the world, unsurpassed guide for taming beings, teacher of gods and humans, Buddha, Bhagavan. Again, Shariputra, the lifespan of that Bhagavan Tathagata Dharma-rati was ten thousand years. Also, Shariputra, that Tathagata Dharma-rati had a Sangha of one hundred thousand Bhikshus, all of whom were Arhats, free from defilements, possessing mastery, and having reached the ultimate perfection of all mental mastery; it was a great assembly of pure Arhats. Shariputra, at that time, there was a weaver named Thagpa, who was a weaver, handsome, beautiful, pleasing to behold, with excellent complexion and fully developed, who lived not far from where the Tathagata Dharma-rati resided, and made his living by weaving. Every evening, after finishing his work, he would go home and always offer a piece of bright cloth to the Blessed One, the Tathagata Dharma-rati, and pray thus: "Blessed One, by the root of virtue of offering this cloth to the Blessed One, may I become a Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha in the future, possessing all means of gathering." Gradually, he offered five hundred pieces of cloth.

Thus, he did not fall into evil destinies for fifteen kotis of nayutas of kalpas. With that root of virtue, he experienced a koti thousand universal monarchs. With that root of virtue, he experienced a koti thousand lords of the hundred deities. With the root of virtue, the gentle and pleasing first action, he pleased a koti thousand Buddhas, and served them all with flowers, incense, perfumes, garlands, unguents, powders, Dharma robes, umbrellas, banners, streamers, clothes, food, bedding, medicine for the sick, and implements. He made them his teachers, made them into images, and made offerings. Therefore, after countless kalpas, he attained the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and from the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One named Well-Collected, who appeared in the world, to the one named Buddha Bhagavan, he remained for twenty kotis of years. Of him, twenty kotis of arhats, whose outflows were exhausted, who were without afflictions, who were masters, and who had reached the other shore of all the powers of the mind, there was a great gathering of listeners. Five kotis of Bodhisattvas were also established in the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. He taught the Dharma, benefited countless immeasurable beings, and passed into nirvana. After that Bhagavan passed into nirvana, the sacred Dharma remained for a thousand years. His relics also became extensive, like the appearance of Shariputra and his passing into nirvana. Shariputra, offering a silk scarf and generating the mind of enlightenment, ultimately depends on the Buddha's complete Dharma. Shariputra, the mind is not a great gift. Shariputra, if the gift is great but the mind is not, then it is like being called a harsh benefactor, who gives such a gift but does not subdue the mind. Shariputra, abide in the turmoil of the world, and look to the complete attainment of all. Shariputra, a wise Bodhisattva, even a small gift is great.

It can be done. It is superior through the power of wisdom, and it increases through the power of excellent knowledge. It becomes immeasurable through the power of dedication. Then, in order to extensively reveal the meaning of the Bhagavan, these verses of praise were spoken: One does not give alms for the sake of desiring form, nor for the sake of enjoying heavenly bliss, but for the sake of desiring the supreme, unsurpassed Buddhahood. Therefore, even a small alms becomes manifold. Fame, speech, sounds, and service and happiness are never desired. Death, transmigration, and birth are all not desired. Therefore, a small alms becomes a great fruit. Whatever food, drink, and Dharma robes are given, it is not for the sake of desiring the existence of samsara, but for the sake of seeking the door of immortality through giving. Even as little as the tip of a hair, alms are given. One becomes without arrogance and without conceit. All stinginess and miserliness are abandoned. Those things will never come again, therefore, they are generously given for the benefit of the world. The kingdom of kings, wealth, grain, and life are given. Their minds do not change, and after giving, great joy is obtained. Giving alms and offering, it is not difficult to attain enlightenment. Parents, mothers, and children are seen as hateful, and it is the same for beggars and all beings in the world. Those who practice the supreme conduct of enlightenment, when giving alms, are always without jealousy. Seeing them, they do not become angry, and they speak as before. Those who are not friendly are always friendly, and they give fearlessness to those who are afraid. Whatever objects they have, they are not stingy to beggars. They always give to those who desire the Dharma, but they do not give to those who desire kingship. They always speak truthfully, and they also give the alms of the Dharma. Who would desire kingship except for greedy desires? They do not desire the kingship of desire, nor do they desire the happiness of the gods. They completely seek the enlightenment of the Buddha, and they give alms with great fame. Oneself and other things such as wealth are quickly and generously given away. Those supreme enlightenments will never be abandoned. The wise do not desire form, nor do they desire enjoyment, nor do they desire heaven, nor do they desire nirvana. Knowing the path, skilled in the path.
