Then, the Secret Lord, the one holding the vajra in his hand, knowing the thoughts of King Ajatashatru, said to King Ajatashatru: Great King, this vajra is both heavy and light. He asked: Why is it heavy, and how is it light? He replied: Great King, for those sentient beings who are arrogant, conceited, and haughty, it is heavy in order to subdue them. For those sentient beings who are without arrogance and are upright, it is light. Then, the Secret Lord, the one holding the vajra in his hand, blessed that place as vajra and placed the vajra on the ground, and immediately the three-thousand great-thousand world realm shook in six ways. Then, the Secret Lord, the one holding the vajra in his hand, said to King Ajatashatru: Great King, lift this vajra from this ground. Then, King Ajatashatru, endowed with great strength, tried to lift the vajra with all his might, but he could not move or shake it even by a hair's breadth. He was amazed and, joining his palms, prayed to the Bhagavan, saying: Bhagavan, I am endowed with great strength, and I am even capable of lifting an elephant wearing armor and an elephant saddle with one hand, but I cannot move or shake this small vajra, let alone lift it. 具寿大目犍连心生惊异，以头顶礼世尊双足，禀白如下：世尊，我为世尊于诸声闻众中所示现神通第一者。世尊，我如是神通广大，如是威权广大，如是神力广大。世尊，我于何时欲求之时，能将四大海之水聚于一掌之中。世尊，此三千大千世界，譬如有人以一喀尔沙巴拿，以指尖拨弄之，我亦如是拨弄之。世尊，如是神通广大、神力广大之日月，我亦能持之。山王须弥山，亦能以一手取之，掷至梵天世界之间。世尊，我亦调伏龙王难陀与近难陀二者。世尊，我亦曾至光辉世界。我亦曾见如须弥山般之世界。世尊，我若移动此如是微小之金刚杵，或未曾拿起能摇动之石，世尊，我是否已全然丧失神通之力，或未臻圆满耶？世尊告曰：大目犍连，汝未全然丧失神通之力，然此菩提萨埵之力之加持，诸声闻与独觉亦不能动摇，何况其余有情？目犍连，于如恒河沙数之佛土中，所有之山王须弥山皆能移动或摇动，然此金刚杵，则不能从此地移动或摇动。具寿大目犍连禀白：世尊，如是持此金刚杵之秘密主金刚手，乃大力者也。世尊告曰：目犍连，于三千大千世界中，所有之须弥山

The venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, filled with wonder, bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and said: "Blessed One, I am shown by the Blessed One to be the foremost among all the Śrāvakas in terms of miraculous power. Blessed One, I am known to have such great miraculous power, such great authority, and such great strength. Blessed One, whenever I desire, I can hold the mass of water from the four great oceans in the palm of one hand. Blessed One, this three-thousand great-thousand world system, just as someone might flick a karshapana with the tip of a finger, I can flick it in the same way. Blessed One, even the sun and moon, which have such great miraculous power and great strength, I can hold them. Mount Sumeru, the king of mountains, I can also take it with one hand and throw it up to the Brahmā world. Blessed One, I have also subdued the dragon kings Nanda and Upananda. Blessed One, I have also been to the world of radiance. I have also seen worlds as large as Mount Sumeru. Blessed One, if I were to move this vajra, which is so small, or if I have not even been able to pick up a stone that can be moved, Blessed One, have I completely lost my power of miracles, or have I not become perfect?" The Blessed One said: "Mahāmaudgalyāyana, you have not completely lost your power of miracles, but this blessing of the power of the Bodhisattva, even all the Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas cannot shake it, what need is there to mention other sentient beings? Maudgalyāyana, in Buddha-fields as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, all the Mount Sumerus, the kings of mountains, can be moved or shaken, but this vajra cannot be moved or shaken from this place." The venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said: "Blessed One, thus, the secret lord Vajrapani, who holds this vajra, is the most powerful."
