Chapter Thirty-Four: The Chapter on Supernormal Knowledge Chapter Thirty-Four: The Chapter on Supernormal Knowledge The Sutra Called "The Greatly Extensive Buddha's Wonderful Taming," Volume Twenty-Seven. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Samantabhadra again spoke to those Bodhisattvas: "Oh, sons of the Victorious Ones, these ten are the supernormal knowledges of the Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas. What are the ten? Oh, sons of the Victorious Ones, here, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva thoroughly knows the minds and thoughts of all the sentient beings born in one realm of the great trichiliocosm. He thoroughly knows the generation of the mind. He knows good and non-good, vast and narrow, great and small, following samsara and turning away from samsara, clarity of mind, the mind of a Shravaka and the mind of a Pratyekabuddha, the mind of a Bodhisattva, the conduct of a Shravaka and the conduct of a Pratyekabuddha, gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, humans and non-humans, sentient beings in hell, those born in the animal realm, those in the realm of Yama, preta, and those born in unfavorable circumstances. He also thoroughly knows their minds and conduct. He thoroughly knows the various kinds of sentient beings, distinguishes the many kinds of sentient beings, and thoroughly knows the thoughts of the sentient beings in many immeasurable classifications. Similarly, he thoroughly knows with his mind the thoughts of the sentient beings born in a hundred world realms, a thousand world realms, a hundred thousand world realms, from a hundred million world realms to unspeakable world realms, and the thoughts of the sentient beings born in as many realms as the extremely fine dust particles of hundreds of thousands of millions of Buddha fields. Oh, sons of the Victorious Ones, this is called the Bodhisattvas' skill and knowledge of the mind, and it is the first supernormal knowledge of wisdom. Oh, sons of the Victorious Ones, furthermore, the Bodhisattva can

Between the Buddhafields, which are inexpressible and again inexpressible, and as many as the minute particles, sentient beings die and are born as follows: the path of happiness and the lower realms, ugly colors and not ugly colors, bad and good, afflicted and not afflicted, purified and not purified. Thus, many kinds of sentient beings, the kinds of gods, the kinds of nagas, the kinds of yakshas, the kinds of gandharvas, the kinds of asuras, the kinds of garudas, the kinds of kinnaras, the kinds of mahoragas, the kinds of humans, the kinds of non-humans, the kinds of narrow ones, the kinds of wide ones, the kinds of small ones, and the kinds of large ones. He knows well the birth and death of various kinds of beings. Because that divine eye is unobstructed, pure, and utterly pure, he truly sees how sentient beings have accumulated karma. He sees how they experience happiness and suffering, how they have accumulated karma, what kind of karmic manifestations they have, what kind of thoughts they have, what kind of discriminations they have, what kind of views they have, what kind of pride they have, what kind of causes they have, what kind of actions they have, what kind of objects they have, and in what manner they act. He sees all of these things clearly. O sons of the Victorious Ones, this is the divine eye of the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, the second kind of super-knowledge of wisdom. O sons of the Victorious Ones! Furthermore, the Bodhisattva remembers and knows well the past abodes of himself and other sentient beings belonging to the world system, between the Buddhafields, which are inexpressible and again inexpressible, and as many as the minute particles. He also remembers his own past abodes for as many kalpas as there are inexpressible and again inexpressible minute particles in the Buddhafields. He also remembers and knows well the past abodes of other sentient beings for as many kalpas as there are inexpressible and again inexpressible minute particles in the Buddhafields. Himself

In the past, in a certain place, there lived someone named this, with the family name this, the race this, eating this food, and experiencing happiness and suffering in this way. Thus, I remember and fully understand my own past lives. This sentient being, in the past, lived in a certain place, named this, with the family name this, the race this, eating this food, and experiencing happiness and suffering in this way. Thus, other sentient beings, in the world realms, Buddha-fields, between countless and countless infinitesimal dust particles, I remember and fully understand the past lives of all those beings. Those beings, each and every one, the continuation of existence from one life to another, including causes and conditions. In the continuation of life, the various forms of abiding and existing, at the end of the past, abiding in various ways. The continuation of the world, and the continuation of arising, from one to another. Bodies with different characteristics, various different forms, from all the various different forms accumulated, the various different doors of birth, becoming places of birth. Latent, and generating various different minds through various kinds of actions and views. Through various kinds of causes and conditions, the continuation of various different actions arising from others, in the world realms, Buddha-fields, countless and countless infinitesimal dust particles, I remember and fully understand. Just as I understand the actions of the sentient beings in one world realm, similarly, in the continuation of the world realms, Buddha-fields, countless and countless infinitesimal dust particles, the past lives of the sentient beings, abiding and acting, I remember and fully understand. The past end of those kalpas, in those world realms, Buddhas, Bhagavad, Buddha-fields, countless and countless infinitesimal dust particles appeared, their names were this, the appearance was like this.
