All the extremely small particles of the Buddha's lands, as many as there are, were all companions and the sole means of the practices and virtuous roots of the bodhisattva Vairochana, the Tathagata, the Blessed One of the past. Then, the bodhisattva Samantabhadra, by the power of the Buddha, arose from his seat, bared one shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and with palms joined, approached the Blessed One and said, "Blessed One, if you would allow me to ask and grant me the opportunity to inquire and receive prophecies, I would like to ask the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha, about one matter." Having spoken thus, the Blessed One said to the bodhisattva mahasattva Samantabhadra, "Samantabhadra, ask the Tathagata whatever you wish, and I will satisfy your mind with the questions and the prophecies." Having spoken thus, the bodhisattva Samantabhadra said to the Blessed One, "Venerable Blessed One, how do those bodhisattvas who possess samadhi and many liberations, who are the gateway to Samantabhadra's practices, and who possess Samantabhadra's conduct and aspirations, enter into samadhi and liberation, and how do they arise? How do they obtain the distinct places of samadhi? How do they continuously and skillfully enter and arise from the inconceivable samadhi of the bodhisattvas? How do they obtain the power and transformations of the supreme of all samadhis?" Having spoken thus, the Blessed One said to the bodhisattva Samantabhadra, "Samantabhadra, it is very good, very good that you think of asking the Tathagata about this matter for the sake of all the circles of bodhisattvas who have appeared in the past, future, and present, and all the circles of the Tathagatas. Samantabhadra, therefore, it is for the sake of the inconceivable transformations of the bodhisattva Samantabhadra, and the supreme of bodhisattvas.
