The Maitreya Sutra. The Maitreya Sutra. In Sanskrit: Maitrī sūtra In Tibetan: The Maitreya Sutra. I prostrate with respect to the noble Three Jewels. The Teacher once resided in Kapilavastu, in the Nyagrodha Garden, on the banks of the Rohini River. Then, the venerable Shariputra, for the sake of the future Buddha, asked the Blessed One: Your successor, the wise one, what kind of Buddha will he become? The one with eyes, fully developed, I wish to listen to. Having heard the venerable one's request, the Blessed One spoke thus: The accumulation of merit is not small, the great fame is invincible, all qualities cannot be fully described, briefly and well-spoken, only a part will be shown. Shariputra, listen to my words. This is a good kalpa, in hundreds of thousands of years, by the name of Maitreya, he will become the Buddha, the best of the two-legged. As I pass away, five periods will initially arise: the period of fruition, the period of practice, the period of doctrine, the period of mere signs, and the period of relics. Among them, the period of fruition is when, after the Buddha's complete nirvana, enlightenment can still be generated within a thousand years. This is a time that has passed and gone. If there are non-returners, once-returners, and stream-enterers, then it should not be said that the period of fruition has ended. The remaining stream-enterers, after they pass away, it is then said that the period of fruition has ended. This is what is meant by the end of the period of fruition. The period of practice refers to when one cannot train in the fruits of the path of tranquility and insight, but can only protect the four root vows. In the past and gone times, only the four root vows are protected. Those who protect the four root vows, even if there are about a hundred monks within a thousand years, it should not be said that the period of practice has ended. If there is only one monk among the hundred, and his vows are broken or he dies, then it is said that the period of practice has ended. This is what is meant by the end of the period of practice.

Oh! The so-called "period between the disappearance of the teachings" refers to the time when the meaning of the Buddha's three pitaka scriptures is not understood, only the words are recited, and the period between the existence of the scriptures is called the complete period of the disappearance of the teachings. In the passing years, the kings of the age of strife will do things that are not in accordance with the Dharma. Ministers and others will also do things that are not in accordance with the Dharma, and then the localities and regions will also be the same. Because of their actions that are not in accordance with the Dharma, the gods will not send down rain properly, and the crops will not ripen properly. Because their crops do not ripen, the Sangha of monks cannot obtain food. Because the monks do not receive food, they cannot maintain their disciples and grand-disciples. In the passing years, the period of the disappearance of the teachings will decline. First, the great Abhidharma will decline. After it disappears, the verses of Yamaka, as well as the stories of the ground, person, designation, relics, differentiation, and the Dhammapada will also disappear. After the Abhidharma Pitaka disappears, the Sutra Pitaka will also disappear. Then the latter part of the Anga scriptures will disappear. After the latter part of the Anga scriptures disappears, the Samyukta Nikaya will also disappear. The Majjhima Nikaya and the Digha Nikaya will also disappear. After the Digha Nikaya disappears, the Jataka tales, including the Vinaya Pitaka, will remain. For the Vinaya Pitaka, only a sense of shame is maintained. In the passing years, even the Jataka tales cannot be maintained. First, the Jataka tales of all salvation will disappear. Finally, the leafless Jataka tales will disappear. After the Jataka tales disappear, only the Vinaya Pitaka will be maintained. In the passing years, if someone promotes even one verse of the Buddha's teachings, the period of the disappearance of the teachings will not disappear. In the time when the king believes in the Dharma, a golden plate is placed on the back of an elephant, and a thousand taels of gold are placed in it, and then music is sounded three times in the center of the city, proclaiming: Whoever knows the verses spoken by the Buddha, let him take the thousand taels of gold.
