Chapter Thirty: The Chapter on Sadāprarudita Chapter Thirty: The Chapter on Sadāprarudita The Eight Thousand Verse Prajñāpāramitā, Volume Twenty-Three. Furthermore, Subhuti, how should a Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva, Sadāprarudita, who is now a Tathāgata, an Arhat, a Perfectly Awakened Buddha, seek the Prajñāpāramitā by practicing celibacy in the presence of the one who proclaims the inexhaustible sound and melody? Having spoken thus, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, how did the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva Sadāprarudita seek that Prajñāpāramitā? Having spoken thus, the Blessed One said to the venerable Subhuti: Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva Sadāprarudita, in the past, when seeking the Prajñāpāramitā, did not cherish his body, did not look to his life, did not dwell on gain, respect, and honor, but sought it by seeking. When he sought the Prajñāpāramitā, he went to a solitary forest hermitage, and from the sky, there was this voice: Son of good family, go to the east, and you will hear the Prajñāpāramitā. Do not give rise to the thought of bodily fatigue, do not give rise to the thought of sleep and drowsiness, do not give rise to the thought of food, do not give rise to the thought of drink, do not give rise to the thought of night, do not give rise to the thought of day, do not give rise to the thought of cold, do not give rise to the thought of heat, go thus. Do not cherish any desire for anything inside or outside. Son of good family, go without looking to the left. Not to the right, not to the east, not to the south, not to the west, not to the north, not above, not below, do not look to any direction or intermediate direction, go thus. Son of good family, how without moving from self, and also not from the perishable collection, how without moving from form, and how without moving from feeling, perception, formations, and how without moving from consciousness, go thus. Whoever moves from this, that one is degenerate.

It will degenerate. From what will it degenerate? It will degenerate from the Buddhas' teachings. Whoever degenerates from the Buddhas' teachings will engage in samsara. Whoever engages in samsara will not engage in the perfection of wisdom, and therefore will not attain the perfection of wisdom. Such a sound was heard. Having spoken thus, the bodhisattva mahasattva should always act accordingly. Why is that? Because I want to benefit all sentient beings and want to accomplish all the Buddhas' teachings. Having spoken thus, that sound always said to the bodhisattva mahasattva: Noble son, always well, well! Then the bodhisattva mahasattva always heard the sound again: Noble son, you should generate faith in emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness towards all phenomena, and you should thoroughly seek the perfection of wisdom. You should completely abandon signs, completely abandon things, and completely abandon the view of sentient beings. Noble son, you should completely abandon evil friends. You should attend to, respect, and serve those virtuous friends who teach all phenomena as emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, unborn, unarisen, unceasing, and without substance. Noble son, if you practice in that way, before long you will hear the perfection of wisdom contained in a book or present in the body of a Dharma-speaking monk. Noble son, you should generate the perception of a teacher towards the one from whom you hear this perfection of wisdom, and you should repay and be aware of his kindness. Because the one from whom you hear this perfection of wisdom is my virtuous friend, and by hearing his teachings, I will quickly become non-retrogressing from unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, and will attend to the Tathagatas, Arhats, perfect, complete Buddhas.
