Even those sentient beings who have attained perfect enlightenment and have rightly entered the path to perfect Buddhahood will never generate a Bodhicitta that regresses from that state. Having rightly seen the suffering of sentient beings wandering in samsara, they will generate vast aspirations for unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment. Why is that? Because those who possess such Bodhicitta think, 'How shall I ferry sentient beings across by ferrying myself across, liberate them by liberating myself, give them respite by giving myself respite, and lead them to complete Nirvana by leading myself to complete Nirvana?' Those who abide with such Bodhicitta truly seek great compassion, seek healing, and cherish the world, including gods, humans, and asuras, with loving-kindness. O Blessed One, if one rejoices in the Bodhicitta of those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who have first entered the vehicle, and also rejoices in the Bodhicitta of those who practice the conduct of Bodhisattvas, and also rejoices in the irreversible Dharma-nature of the irreversible Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, and also rejoices in the Dharma-nature of the one-birth-bound Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, O Blessed One, how much merit will that son or daughter of good family generate?' When he had spoken thus, the Blessed One spoke thus to Indra, the lord of the gods: 'Kaushika, it is possible to measure the size of Mount Meru, the king of mountains, by weighing it on a scale. But, Kaushika, it is not possible to measure the merit of the Bodhicitta possessed by a son or daughter of good family who rejoices in a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Kaushika, it is also possible to measure the size of the world of the four great continents by weighing it on a scale. But, Kaushika, it is not possible to measure the merit of the Bodhicitta possessed by one who rejoices. Kaushika, also the thousandfold world.

The measure of the number of realms of the gods can be taken by weighing them, but the measure of the merit of the mind of enlightenment with which one rejoices, Kausika, cannot be taken. Kausika, likewise, the measure of the number of realms of the second dhyana can be taken by weighing them, but the measure of the merit of the mind of enlightenment with which one rejoices, Kausika, cannot be taken. Kausika, likewise, the measure of the number of realms of the three thousand great thousands of worlds can be taken by weighing them, but the measure of the merit of the mind of enlightenment with which a son or daughter of good family, a bodhisattva mahasattva, rejoices cannot be taken. Thus it was spoken, and the lord of the gods, Indra, said this to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, those beings who, from the time that a bodhisattva mahasattva first generates the mind, until the time that they awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, do not hear, do not know, have not seen, and do not think of rejoicing in the generation of the mind, should be known to be blessed by the demons. Blessed One, those beings who do not rejoice in this generation of the mind of the bodhisattvas mahasattvas have become the allies of the demons. Blessed One, those beings who do not rejoice in this generation of the mind of the bodhisattvas mahasattvas have died and transmigrated from the abode of the demons. Why is that? Blessed One, those who accomplish these generations of the mind, and dedicate these generations of the mind to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, or rejoice in these generations of the mind, are those who destroy the abode of the demons. Blessed One, those bodhisattvas mahasattvas who have generated the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, the generation of the mind of those bodhisattvas mahasattvas

These are to be rejoiced at. O Blessed One, those sons or daughters of good family who do not abandon the Tathagata, do not abandon the Dharma, and do not abandon the Sangha, rejoice in this generation of mind. Having thus spoken, the Blessed One spoke thus to Śakra, the lord of the gods: Kauśika, it is so, it is so. Kauśika, those sons or daughters of good family who do not abandon the Tathagata, do not abandon the Dharma, and do not abandon the Sangha, should rejoice in these generations of mind. Kauśika, if sons or daughters of good family who are of the Hearer Vehicle, the Solitary Buddha Vehicle, or the Bodhisattva Vehicle rejoice in this generation of mind, then they will quickly please the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Buddhas, and will not displease them. Having thus spoken, Śakra, the lord of the gods, said to the Blessed One: O Blessed One, it is so, O Sugata, it is so. Those sons or daughters of good family who are of the Hearer Vehicle, the Solitary Buddha Vehicle, or the Bodhisattva Vehicle, who rejoice in the mind they have generated, will very quickly please the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Buddhas, and will not displease them. Thus, those roots of virtue of mind generation that are endowed with rejoicing, wherever they are born, will be honored, respected, remembered, offered to, depicted, and attended to. They will not see unpleasant forms, they will not hear unpleasant sounds, they will not smell unpleasant odors, they will not taste unpleasant flavors, and they will not be aware of unpleasant tactile sensations.
