How does one generate it? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, the merit of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom appears only as a demonstration, appears only as an accumulation, appears only as nourishment, appears only as being without essence. Subhuti, however a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva individually contemplates all dharmas in this way, in that way, Subhuti, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva will not be separated from the Perfection of Wisdom. Subhuti, however a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is not separated from the Perfection of Wisdom, in that way, he generates immeasurable and countless merit. Subhuti asked: Blessed One, what is the difference, what is the distinction between immeasurable and countless, and countless and countless? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what is called immeasurable is that which does not allow measurement. Subhuti, what is called countless is that which cannot be exhausted by counting. Subhuti asked: Blessed One, is there a term by which form also becomes immeasurable? Likewise, feelings, perceptions, volitions, and Blessed One, is there a term by which consciousness also becomes immeasurable? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, you said, 'Blessed One, is there a term by which form also becomes immeasurable?' Likewise, feelings, perceptions, and volitions, and Blessed One, is there a term by which consciousness also becomes immeasurable?' Subhuti, there is a term by which the very nature of form becomes immeasurable. Likewise, the very nature of feelings, the very nature of perceptions, and the very nature of volitions, and Subhuti, there is a term by which the very nature of consciousness also becomes immeasurable. Subhuti asked: Blessed One, what is the synonym for what is called immeasurable? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what is called immeasurable is a synonym for emptiness.

Okay. The term "immeasurable" is a term for the signless. Subhuti, the term "immeasurable" is a term for the wishless. Subhuti asked: World Honored One, is the term "immeasurable" only a term for emptiness? World Honored One, is the term "immeasurable" only a term for signlessness and wishlessness, and not a term for other dharmas? The World Honored One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Haven't I said that all dharmas are empty? Subhuti asked: World Honored One, the Thus Come One has indeed said that all dharmas are empty. The World Honored One said: Subhuti, whatever is emptiness is also inexhaustible, and whatever is emptiness is also immeasurable. Subhuti, therefore, these dharmas should not be regarded as having differences or distinctions in meaning. Subhuti, the Thus Come One has taught and proclaimed that these are merely expressions. The so-called immeasurable, or countless, or inexhaustible, or emptiness, or signless, or wishless, or non-action, or non-arising, or non-cessation, or non-thing, or detachment, or cessation, or nirvana, these are, Subhuti, what the Thus Come One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One, has spoken to reveal the realization of the teachings. Subhuti asked: World Honored One, the Thus Come One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One, has revealed the limit of the dharma-nature of all dharmas, and the dharma-nature of all dharmas is also inexpressible, it is truly wonderful! World Honored One, according to how I understand the meaning of what the World Honored One has said, all dharmas are inexpressible. The World Honored One said: Yes, Subhuti, it is so, Subhuti, all dharmas are inexpressible. Why is that? Subhuti, whatever is the emptiness of all dharmas is…

Because it cannot be expressed. Subhuti asked: World Honored One, then in the meaning of the inexpressible, is there increase or decrease? The World Honored One said: Subhuti, it is not so. Subhuti asked: World Honored One, if there is no increase in the meaning of the inexpressible, and no decrease, then there is no increase in the perfection of generosity, and no decrease either. Similarly, in the perfection of morality, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, and the perfection of wisdom, World Honored One, there is no increase and no decrease either. World Honored One, if these six perfections have no increase and no decrease, then World Honored One, how can a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva realize unexcelled, perfect enlightenment through the power of these six perfections that do not increase, or how can they approach unexcelled, perfect enlightenment? World Honored One, without perfecting the perfections, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva will not approach unexcelled, perfect enlightenment. The World Honored One said: Subhuti, it is so, it is so. Subhuti, although there is no increase or decrease in the meaning of the perfections, Subhuti, nevertheless, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices the perfection of wisdom and meditates on the perfection of wisdom, being skillful in means, does not think, 'This perfection of generosity is increasing,' or 'This perfection of generosity is decreasing.' However, he thinks, 'This so-called perfection of generosity is merely a name.' Then, he practices generosity and dedicates those mental activities, those aspirations, and those roots of virtue entirely to unexcelled, perfect enlightenment, that is, unexcelled, perfect.
