Fifteenth Chapter: The Chapter on Gods. Fifteenth Chapter: The Chapter on Gods. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, how should a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who is a beginner dwell in the Perfection of Wisdom? How should he train?" After he had spoken thus, the Blessed One said to the venerable Subhuti: "Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who is a beginner, wishing to train in the Perfection of Wisdom, should attend to, rely on, and honor virtuous friends. Those who instruct and subsequently show this Perfection of Wisdom, and those who transmit the meaning of this Perfection of Wisdom, Subhuti, those should be recognized as the virtuous friends of that Bodhisattva Mahasattva. To him, one should say: 'Son of good family, come here, practice yoga in the Perfection of Generosity.' Likewise, practice yoga in the Perfection of Morality, the Perfection of Patience, the Perfection of Diligence, the Perfection of Meditation, and the Perfection of Wisdom. 'Son of good family, whatever you give as alms, dedicate all of that to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment.' 'Son of good family, do not be conceited about form with regard to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment.' Likewise, do not be conceited about feeling, perception, formations, son of good family, do not be conceited about consciousness with regard to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. Why is that? Son of good family, because all knowing itself is without conceit.' Likewise, whatever moral conduct you protect, and likewise apply that. Son of good family, whatever patience you accomplish, son of good family, whatever diligence you exert, son of good family, whatever meditation you abide in, son of good family, whatever wisdom you cultivate, dedicate all of that to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. Son of good family, you

Do not be arrogant in the form aggregate towards the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Likewise, not in the feeling aggregate, not in the perception aggregate, not in the formations aggregate, son of good family, do not be arrogant in the consciousness aggregate towards the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Why is that? Son of good family, the nature of omniscience is non-arrogance. Son of good family, do not desire the ground of hearers or solitary buddhas. Thus, the meaning of the Perfection of Wisdom is proclaimed. Subhuti, thus the bodhisattva mahasattvas who are beginners should be gradually introduced to the Perfection of Wisdom by virtuous friends. Subhuti asked: Blessed One, which bodhisattva mahasattvas, having rightly entered into the manifestation of perfect complete enlightenment, rely on generosity of such nature, discipline of such nature, patience of such nature, diligence of such nature, meditation of such nature, and wisdom of such nature, and having become independent in complete nirvana, do not desire complete nirvana, but seeing the realm of sentient beings suffering greatly, seek to manifest perfect complete enlightenment and become enlightened, not fearing samsara, this is difficult to do. Having thus spoken, the Blessed One said to the venerable Subhuti: Subhuti, it is so, it is so. Subhuti, whichever bodhisattva mahasattva has entered for the benefit of the world, for the happiness of the world, and for the love of the world, having manifested perfect complete enlightenment in unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment, will become the protector of the world, will become the refuge of the world, will become the dwelling of the world, will become the friend of the world, will become the island of the world, will become the light of the world, will become the guide of the world, will become the support of the world.

Thinking thus. To strive with diligence for the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment of such a nature is to perform a difficult task. Subhuti, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, having manifestly attained unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment and become a Buddha, become the protector of the world? Subhuti, he protects them from all the sufferings of the world that are experienced in samsara, and he strives and exerts himself to abandon those sufferings. Subhuti, thus a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, having manifestly attained unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment and become a Buddha, becomes the protector of the world. Subhuti, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, having manifestly attained unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment and become a Buddha, become the refuge of the world? Subhuti, those beings who are subject to birth, subject to aging, subject to sickness, subject to death, subject to sorrow and lamentation, subject to suffering, subject to displeasure, and subject to disturbance, he completely liberates them from birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow and lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and disturbance. Subhuti, thus a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, having manifestly attained unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment and become a Buddha, becomes the refuge of the world. Subhuti, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, having manifestly attained unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment and become a Buddha, become the abode of the world? Subhuti, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfect Buddha teaches the Dharma to beings in order to eliminate association. Subhuti, thus a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, having manifestly attained unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment and become a Buddha, becomes the abode of the world. Subhuti asked: Blessed One, how is it without association? The Blessed One replied: Subhuti, whatever is without connection to form, that is without association with form. Association with form
