Chapter Thirty-one: The Chapter on Non-Retrogression Chapter Thirty-one: The Chapter on Non-Retrogression Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Venerable Blessed One, are Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who have thus thoroughly understood the characteristics of the Dharma non-retrogressing?" Subhuti, they are. He asked: "Venerable Blessed One, what are the aspects, what are the signs, and what are the characteristics of a non-retrogressing Bodhisattva-Mahasattva? How should we know that a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is non-retrogressing?" After he had spoken, the Blessed One said to the venerable Subhuti: "Subhuti, in this case, all the explanations of the grounds—whatever is the ground of ordinary beings, whatever is the ground of Hearers, whatever is the ground of Solitary Buddhas, whatever is the ground of Bodhisattvas, and whatever is the ground of the Tathagatas—all those are the Suchness of Dharma. It is immutable, without conceptualization, non-dual, and without differentiation. The Bodhisattva-Mahasattva enters into that Suchness, which is the Suchness of Dharma, and that Suchness does not conceptualize the Suchness of Dharma, but enters into Suchness solely in the manner of non-conceptualization. Having entered into it, he knows what that Suchness is, and having abandoned it, he does not doubt any Dharma, thinking, 'This is not the Suchness of Dharma.' This Suchness is unique, like the essence of all Dharmas and the faultless nature of Dharmas. This is not speaking randomly, but only speaking what is meaningful, and not what is meaningless. He does not look at what others have done or not done, but seeks what is well-spoken. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who possesses those aspects, signs, and characteristics should be known as retrogressing." He asked: "Venerable Blessed One, by what aspects, what signs, and what characteristics is it shown that a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is non-retrogressing?" The Blessed One said:

Tsalpa: O Subhuti, all dharmas are without characteristics, without signs, and without marks. Question: If all dharmas are without characteristics, without signs, and without marks, then from which dharmas does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva turn away, and is shown to be irreversible? The Blessed One said: O Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva turns away from form, and similarly, when he turns away from feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness, at that time the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is shown to be irreversible. Furthermore, O Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva turns away from the ground of ordinary beings, turns away from the ground of Hearers, and turns away from the ground of Solitary Buddhas, at that time he is shown to be irreversible. Furthermore, O Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva- Mahasattva does not turn away from the perfection of generosity, and similarly, does not turn away up to the perfection of wisdom, does not turn away from inner emptiness, and does not turn away up to the emptiness of the nature of non-things, and similarly, combining them, when he does not turn away up to the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddhas, at that time that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is shown to be irreversible. Furthermore, O Subhuti, the irreversible Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, these ascetics and Brahmins know what is to be known and see what is to be seen, or hold correct views. Saying that the views before these non-Buddhist ascetics and Brahmins are without basis, they do not create doubt about the well-spoken Dharma-Vinaya, they do not regard discipline and asceticism as supreme, they do not fall into wrong views, they do not regard auspiciousness and auspicious objects as pure, they do not prostrate to other gods, and they do not offer or consider flowers, garlands, incense, unguents, lamps, incense, powders, clothes, umbrellas, banners, and flags as things to be done. O Subhuti, those characteristics, signs, and marks
