Chapter Eighteen, The Chapter on Purity. Chapter Eighteen, The Chapter on Purity. Then, the venerable Sharadvatiputra said to the Blessed One: "Venerable Blessed One, from where does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who develops faith in this profound Prajnaparamita pass away and come here? How long will it be before he or she truly enters into unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment? How many Tathagatas has he or she attended and honored? How long has he or she practiced the Paramita of Generosity, and similarly, the Paramita of Ethics, the Paramita of Patience, the Paramita of Diligence, the Paramita of Meditation, and the Paramita of Wisdom? Will he or she develop faith in this profound Prajnaparamita from its meaning and method?" After he said this, the Blessed One said to the venerable Sharadvatiputra: "Sharadvatiputra, that Bodhisattva Mahasattva has attended and honored immeasurable, countless, and limitless Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly and completely enlightened Buddhas in the ten directions of the world, in realms as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, before coming here. They are born and appear here. Sharadvatiputra, that Bodhisattva Mahasattva has entered into unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment from immeasurable and countless kalpas ago. From the moment he or she first generated the mind of enlightenment, he or she has been practicing and coming through the Paramita of Generosity. Similarly, he or she has been practicing and coming through the Paramita of Ethics, the Paramita of Patience, the Paramita of Diligence, the Paramita of Meditation, and the Paramita of Wisdom. Sharadvatiputra, he or she will continue to attend and honor countless and limitless Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly and completely enlightened Buddhas, and come here. Sharadvatiputra, that Bodhisattva Mahasattva is of wisdom.

If one sees or hears the Perfection of Wisdom, one will generate the thought, "I have seen the teacher." The Bodhisattva Mahasattva, son of Sharadvati, will also realize the Perfection of Wisdom in a way that is without meaning, without words, without signs, without duality, and without focus. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: Venerable Blessed One, the Perfection of Wisdom is the teacher of those who listen and those who see. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, it is not so. Why is that? Subhuti, there are no listeners or viewers in the Perfection of Wisdom. Subhuti, because the nature of Dharma is insubstantial, the Perfection of Wisdom is neither heard nor seen. Similarly, because the nature of Dharma is insubstantial, the Perfection of Dhyana is neither heard nor seen. Similarly, because the nature of Dharma is insubstantial, the Perfection of Diligence, the Perfection of Patience, the Perfection of Morality, and the Perfection of Generosity are neither heard nor seen. Similarly, because the nature of Dharma is insubstantial, inner emptiness is neither heard nor seen. Similarly, by analogy, because the nature of Dharma is insubstantial, up to the emptiness of the nature of non-things, it is neither heard nor seen. Similarly, because the nature of Dharma is insubstantial, the mindfulnesses are neither heard nor seen. Similarly, because the nature of Dharma is insubstantial, up to the Noble Eightfold Path, it is neither heard nor seen. Similarly, because the nature of Dharma is insubstantial, from the ten powers of the Tathagata to the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha, it is neither heard nor seen. Subhuti, because the nature of Dharma is insubstantial, enlightenment and Buddhahood are also neither heard nor seen. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: Venerable Blessed One, this Perfection of Wisdom is profound and difficult to believe in. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, it is so, just as you have said. Subhuti, this Perfection of Wisdom is profound.
