Chapter Sixteen: The Chapter on Discrimination Chapter Sixteen: The Chapter on Discrimination Then, those gods thought to themselves: How should we regard the Dharma teaching of the Venerable Subhuti? Then, the Venerable Subhuti, knowing the minds of those gods with his mind, said to those gods: Gods, my Dharma teaching is like an illusion, and those who listen to my Dharma should also regard it as an illusion, because the Dharma that is taught is neither heard nor realized. Then, those gods said to the Venerable Subhuti: Venerable Subhuti, are those sentient beings also like illusions, and is teaching them the Dharma also like an illusion? Similarly, are sentient beings like emanations, and is teaching them the Dharma also like an emanation? The Venerable Subhuti said: Gods, it is just so. Just as you said, sentient beings are like illusions, and teaching them the Dharma is also like an illusion. Sentient beings are like emanations, and teaching them the Dharma is also like an emanation. Gods, I am also like a dream, like an illusion. Gods, form is also like a dream, like an illusion. Sons of the gods, the mindfulnesses are also like dreams, like illusions. Similarly, the four perfect abandonments, the legs of magical power, the faculties, the powers, the branches of enlightenment, and the noble eightfold path are also like dreams, like illusions. Sons of the gods, the ten powers of the Thus-Gone One are also like dreams, like illusions. are like a dream. Similarly, the fruit of entering the stream is also like a dream, like an illusion, and even the fruit of once-returning, the fruit of non-returning, and the state of being an Arhat are also like a dream, like an illusion. Sons of the gods, similarly, self-enlightenment and unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment are also like a dream, like an illusion. Then, those sons of the gods said this to the venerable Subhuti: Venerable Subhuti, do you say that perfect and complete enlightenment is also like a dream, like an illusion? Venerable Subhuti, do you say that Nirvana is also like a dream, like an illusion? The venerable Subhuti said: Sons of the gods, I say that Nirvana is also like a dream, like an illusion. Sons of the gods, if there is any other Dharma that is even more excellent than Nirvana, I would say that that Dharma is also like a dream, like an illusion. Why is that? Sons of the gods, because dream, illusion, and Nirvana are non-dual and indivisible. Then, the venerable son of Sharadvati, the venerable great son of Maudgalyayana, the venerable Mahakashyapa, the venerable son of Katyayana, the venerable Purna Maitreyiputra, the venerable Mahakashyapa, and many hundreds of thousands of Bodhisattvas said this to the venerable Subhuti: Venerable Subhuti, who will take up this Prajnaparamita, which is so profound, so difficult to see, so difficult to realize, so subtle, so refined, so peaceful, so rich? Then, the venerable Subhuti said this to Ananda and those great Shravakas and those Bodhisattva Mahasattvas: Venerable ones, this Prajnaparamita, which is so profound, inconceivable, beyond the realm of thought, subtle, refined, difficult to see, difficult to realize, so peaceful, so rich, immaculate, to be known by noble ones, wise ones, and intelligent ones, therefore
