Chapter Eight: The Chapter on Faultlessness. Chapter Eight: The Chapter on Faultlessness. Then, the venerable Sharadvatiputra said to the Blessed One: "Venerable Blessed One, how does it happen that a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, due to being unskilled in means, falls into the Hearer's ground or the Solitary Buddha's ground, and does not enter the faultless ground of a Bodhisattva? What are the faults of a Bodhisattva? And what is faultlessness?" After asking this, the Blessed One said to the venerable Sharadvatiputra: "Sharadvatiputra, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva has previously certainly fallen and falls into the Hearer's ground or the Solitary Buddha's ground, and does not enter the faultless ground of a Bodhisattva, that is the fault of a Bodhisattva." After saying this, the Blessed One said to the venerable Sharadvatiputra: "Venerable Blessed One, what is the fault of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva that causes him to certainly fall previously?" The Blessed One said: "Sharadvatiputra, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, being unskilled in means, practices the six perfections, and due to being unskilled in means, relies on the doors of liberation of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, and directly realizes the Hearer's ground or the Solitary Buddha's ground, and does not enter the faultless ground of a Bodhisattva, Sharadvatiputra, that is the fault of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva that causes him to certainly fall previously." "Venerable Blessed One, why is it a fault of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva?" The Blessed One said: "Sharadvatiputra, what is called a fault is like this: attachment to Dharma is a fault." He asked: "Venerable Blessed One, what is the fault of attachment to Dharma?" The Blessed One said: "Sharadvatiputra, here, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he abides in the notion that form is impermanent, and he knows it thoroughly and clings to it. Similarly, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness.

Remaining in the notion that things are impermanent and clinging to it with complete understanding is a fault, as it is a bodhisattva-mahasattva's craving for things that accord with their views. Sharadvatiputra, furthermore, when a bodhisattva-mahasattva practices the perfection of wisdom, remaining in the notion that form and so forth up to consciousness is suffering and clinging to it with complete understanding, remaining in the notion that form and so forth up to consciousness is selfless and clinging to it with complete understanding, Likewise, remaining in the notion that form and so forth up to consciousness is emptiness and clinging to it with complete understanding, likewise, remaining in the notion that form and so forth up to consciousness is signless and clinging to it with complete understanding, likewise, remaining in the notion that form and so forth up to consciousness is wishless and clinging to it with complete understanding, likewise, remaining in the notion that form and so forth up to consciousness is peaceful and clinging to it with complete understanding, likewise, remaining in the notion that form and so forth up to consciousness is solitary and clinging to it with complete understanding, likewise, remaining in the notion that form and so forth up to consciousness is utterly pure and clinging to it with complete understanding, likewise, remaining in the notion that form and so forth up to consciousness is unborn and clinging to it with complete understanding, likewise, remaining in the notion that form and so forth up to consciousness is unceasing and clinging to it with complete understanding, likewise, remaining in the notion that form is without entity and clinging to it with complete understanding, and up to consciousness is without entity and clinging to it with complete understanding—Sharadvatiputra, this is a fault, as it is a bodhisattva-mahasattva's craving for things that accord with their views. When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, if he is not skilled in means, he abides in the impermanence of the eye to dharmas, and universally knows and manifestly clings to it; similarly, he abides in the suffering of the eye to dharmas, and universally knows and manifestly clings to it; similarly, he abides in the selflessness of the eye to dharmas, and universally knows and manifestly clings to it; similarly, he abides in the emptiness of the eye to dharmas, and universally knows and manifestly clings to it; similarly, he abides in the signlessness of the eye to dharmas, and universally knows and manifestly clings to it; similarly, he abides in the wishlessness of the eye to dharmas, and universally knows and manifestly clings to it; similarly, he abides in the peace of the eye to dharmas, and universally knows and manifestly clings to it; similarly, he abides in the isolation of the eye to dharmas, and universally knows and manifestly clings to it; similarly, he abides in the complete purity of the eye to dharmas, and universally knows and manifestly clings to it; similarly, he abides in the unarising of the eye to dharmas, and universally knows and manifestly clings to it; similarly, he abides in the unceasing of the eye to dharmas, and universally knows and manifestly clings to it; similarly, he abides in the absence of things in the eye, and universally knows and manifestly clings to it; he abides in the absence of things between dharmas, and universally knows and manifestly clings to it. Sharadvatiputra, this is the fault of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva craving after the conforming dharma. Sharadvatiputra, in this way, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva is not skilled in means, he will surely fall beforehand, and will completely fall into the ground of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, and will not enter into the faultless state of a Bodhisattva. Sharadvatiputra, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, if he is not skilled in means, then (regarding) the realms and so on.
