Then, wouldn't all ordinary beings also not become stream-enterers? And also not become once-returners, non-returners, arhats, solitary buddhas, and unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment? After this request, the Blessed One spoke to the venerable Subhuti, saying: Subhuti, do ordinary beings know the conventional truth or the ultimate truth? If they do, then they would also have the distinctions of the fruits of stream-entry, once-returning, non-returning, arhatship, solitary buddhahood, and unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment. If they know what is called conventional truth or ultimate truth, then they would not be counted among ordinary beings. Therefore, they do not have complete understanding. Therefore, they also do not have the distinctions of the fruits of stream-entry, once-returning, non-returning, arhatship, solitary buddhahood, and unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment. Subhuti, for ordinary beings, there is neither a path, nor an establishment of a path, nor a cultivation of a path. How then could there be a distinction of fruits for ordinary beings? For noble beings, there is a path, and there is an establishment of a path, and there is a cultivation of a path, so there is also a distinction of fruits. Then, the venerable Subhuti asked the Blessed One: Blessed One, is it through cultivating the path that the fruit arises and the fruit is attained? The Blessed One replied: Subhuti, it is not so. The fruit does not arise through cultivating the path, nor is the fruit attained. Subhuti, the fruit is not attained without cultivating the path. The fruit is not attained by the path, nor by the non-path, nor by not abiding in the path. Subhuti, thus should a Bodhisattva Mahasattva know

Practicing in the Perfection of Wisdom is to cause sentient beings to attain fruition, but it is not to cause sentient beings to attain fruition by way of adjudicating in the realm of phenomena. The question: "Venerable One, if there is no attainment of fruition by adjudicating in the realm of conditioned or unconditioned, then the Venerable One says, 'This is the fruit of stream-entry because of abandoning the three fetters. This is the fruit of once-returning because of weakening desire and hatred. This is the fruit of non-returning because of abandoning all the fetters that accord with the realm of desire. This is Arhatship because of abandoning the five fetters that accord with the higher realm. Whatever phenomena arise, all of them are of the nature of cessation,' this is self-awakening. Abandoning all the connections of habitual tendencies is perfect and complete awakening." If this is said, then, Venerable One, there is no attainment of fruition by adjudicating conditioned and unconditioned phenomena, so how should I understand what the Venerable One has said? The Venerable One said, "Subhuti, is the fruit of stream-entry, the fruit of once-returning, the fruit of non-returning, Arhatship, self-awakening, or perfect and complete awakening conditioned or unconditioned?" The question: "Venerable One, that is unconditioned. Sugata, that is unconditioned." The Venerable One said, "Subhuti, is there adjudication of unconditioned phenomena?" The question: "Venerable One, there is not." The Venerable One said, "Subhuti, at any time when a son or daughter of good family realizes conditioned or unconditioned phenomena in this way, as a single characteristic without characteristics, at that time, is there any adjudication of any conditioned or unconditioned phenomena?" The question: "Venerable One, there is not." The Venerable One said, "Subhuti, in that way, the practice of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva in the Perfection of Wisdom is like this:

Because there is no exhaustion in the manner from inner emptiness to emptiness of own-being, therefore, he teaches the Dharma to sentient beings. That is, the perfection of generosity, or the perfection of ethics, or the perfection of patience, or the perfection of diligence, or the perfection of meditation, or the perfection of wisdom, or from the first dhyana to the fourth dhyana, or loving-kindness, or compassion, or joy, or equanimity, or from the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, or the mindfulnesses, or the eightfold noble path, or any Dharma up to the state of omniscience. He himself does not cling, nor does he cause others to cling. Because he does not cling, he has no attachment to anything. For example, an emanation of the Tathagata also gives generosity, and has no attachment to the fruit of generosity except for the purpose of completely liberating all sentient beings from suffering, and does not experience the fruit of generosity. He does not abide in any of the six perfections, or in the dharmas with outflows and without outflows, or in the mundane and supramundane, or in the conditioned and unconditioned dharmas. Subhuti, likewise, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices in the Perfection of Wisdom, he also practices in all dharmas, but does not abide in any dharma, and has no attachment. Why is that? It is because he has thoroughly understood the nature of dharmas. From the Eight Thousand Verse Perfection of Wisdom, the chapter on showing the accomplishment of names, excellent marks, and letters, the seventy-third.
