It is not an illusion, nor is it a listener of illusions. It is not an eye-flower, nor is it a seer of eye-flowers. It is not a mirage, nor is it a seer of mirages. It is not a magic trick, nor is it a seer of magic tricks. It is not a transformation, nor is it a seer of transformations. Why is that? For example, dreams, illusions, eye-flowers, mirages, magic tricks, and transformations are all inverted, and are the inversions of ordinary people. An Arhat is not a dreamer, nor is he a seer of dreams, and even transformations are not seen, nor are they seers of transformations. Similarly, a Pratyekabuddha, a Bodhisattva, and a Tathagata Arhat Samyak-sambuddha are also not dreamers, nor are they seers of dreams, and even transformations are not seen, nor are they seers of transformations. Why is that? Because all dharmas are of the nature of non-substantiality, because they are unborn and non-existent. For those dharmas that are of the nature of non-substantiality and non-establishment, how can a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom become a thinker of substantiality or a thinker of establishment? That is impossible. Why is that? If some dharmas become substantial, established, or existent, then that is not the Perfection of Wisdom. Subhuti, therefore, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom is not attached to form, and is not attached to even consciousness. He is not attached to the desire realm, he is not attached to the form realm, he is not attached to the formless realm. He is not attached to dhyanas, liberations, and samadhis. He is not attached to the four mindfulnesses, and is not attached to even the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment. He is not attached to the samadhi of emptiness, the samadhi of signlessness, and the samadhi of wishlessness.

So it is. There is no attachment to the perfection of generosity. Likewise, adding morality, patience, diligence, meditation, and the perfection of wisdom, there is no attachment. When he practices the perfection of wisdom, he perfects the first ground, and he does not generate desire or attachment to it. What is the reason for this? Because if he does not focus on that ground, how can he generate desire or attachment? Similarly, he perfects up to the tenth ground, and he does not generate desire or attachment to it. What is the reason for this? Because if he does not focus on that ground, how can he generate desire or attachment to it? While he is practicing the perfection of wisdom, he does not focus on that perfection of wisdom. When he practices the perfection of wisdom without focusing on it, he sees that all phenomena are contained within that perfection of wisdom, and those phenomena are also not focused on. What is the reason for this? Because those phenomena and the perfection of wisdom are non-dual, because they are non-dual and undifferentiated. What is the reason for this? Because those phenomena have no difference, because all phenomena are not different by way of showing the realm of phenomena, showing suchness, and showing the true limit. Question: Blessed One, if all phenomena are undifferentiated, then how are virtuous and non-virtuous phenomena taught? How are worldly and transworldly phenomena taught? How are defiled and undefiled phenomena taught? How are conditioned and unconditioned phenomena taught? The Buddha said: Subhuti, what do you think? In the nature of phenomena, is there any mention of conditioned or unconditioned, or the fruit of stream-entry, or the fruit of once-returning, or the fruit of non-returning, or Arhatship, or solitary enlightenment, or even a small part of the enlightenment of the Buddha? Question: Blessed One, there is not. The Buddha said: Subhuti, therefore, you also know from that term that all phenomena are not different, and that phenomena

All phenomena should be understood as being without characteristics, without arising, and without ceasing. Subhuti, when I formerly practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva, I did not perceive the essence of even a single dharma in terms of form, feeling, perception, formations, consciousness, conditioned, unconditioned, or even up to the fruit of a stream-enterer, or even up to enlightenment. Subhuti, thus, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, from the initial generation of the mind up to the complete and perfect enlightenment of unsurpassed, complete enlightenment, one should be skilled in the essence of all dharmas in a manner of non-perception. A Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who is skilled in the essence of all dharmas also perfects the path to enlightenment, also ripens all sentient beings, and also purifies the Buddha-fields. Having abided therein, one awakens to unsurpassed, complete, and perfect enlightenment, and thus tames sentient beings so that they never become afflicted in the three realms of existence. Subhuti, thus, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should train in the Perfection of Wisdom in a manner of being without characteristics. This is called the chapter on showing the absence of characteristics from the eighty-thousand verse Perfection of Wisdom, the seventy-second.
