Chapter Sixty-Nine: Showing the Practice of the Path Chapter Sixty-Nine: Showing the Practice of the Path Furthermore, Subhuti, the bodhisattva-mahasattva enters into the first dhyana, and from there, enters into the fourth dhyana. He enters into the immeasurables. He enters into the formless absorptions, but he does not fully grasp the ripening results. Why is that? Because he is endowed with skillful means, knowing that the dhyanas, the immeasurables, and the formless absorptions are empty of their own characteristics, and he is endowed with skillful means to know up to the unmanifested. Furthermore, Subhuti, when the bodhisattva-mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, from the moment of generating the first thought, being endowed with skillful means, even though he practices the path of abandonment through seeing and cultivation, he does not attain the fruit of stream-enterer. He does not attain the fruit of once-returner, the fruit of non-returner, or even the state of arhat. Why is that? Because he knows that all dharmas are empty of their own characteristics, and he also practices the dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment, and he also transcends the deeds of the hearers and solitary buddhas. Subhuti, this is the patience with regard to the non-arising of dharmas for the bodhisattva-mahasattva. Furthermore, Subhuti, when the bodhisattva-mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he enters into the eight liberations, and he also enters into the nine successive abidings. He does not attain the fruit of stream-enterer, and he does not attain even the state of arhat. Why is that? Because he knows that all dharmas are empty of their own characteristics, and he knows that all dharmas are unmanifested. Furthermore, Subhuti, the bodhisattva-mahasattva also has the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, and great compassion.

He also draws near, and until the Buddha-fields are completely purified and the beings are completely ripened, he does not attain the state of omniscience. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should thus practice the Perfection of Wisdom. The Hundred Thousand Verses on the Perfection of Wisdom, Chapter Forty-seven. When this was said, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who thus practices the profound Dharmas and does not take maturation is endowed with supreme wisdom." When this was said, the Blessed One said to the venerable Subhuti: "Subhuti, it is so, it is so. Subhuti, that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who thus practices the profound Dharmas and does not take maturation is endowed with supreme wisdom. Why is that? Subhuti, it is because the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva does not waver from his own nature." He asked: "Blessed One, what is it that does not waver from its own nature?" He replied: "It does not waver from the absence of things. Subhuti, when you say, 'What does not waver from its own nature?' it does not waver from the own-nature of form. It does not waver from the own-nature of feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness. It does not waver from the own-nature of the Perfection of Generosity, the Perfection of Ethics, the Perfection of Patience, the Perfection of Diligence, the Perfection of Meditation, and the Perfection of Wisdom. It does not waver from the own-nature of the meditations, the immeasurables, and the formless attainments. It does not waver from the own-nature of the mindfulnesses and the eightfold noble path. It does not waver from the own-nature of the emptiness samadhi, the signless samadhi, the wishless samadhi, and great compassion. Why is that? Subhuti,

Therefore, what is the nature of these dharmas? It is because of non-substantiality. Subhuti, one cannot fully awaken to perfect enlightenment by realizing non-substantiality with non-substantiality. Asked: Blessed One, if it is not substantiality, can it be beneficial to realize substantiality? Answered: Subhuti, that is not so. Asked: Blessed One, if it is not substantiality, can it be beneficial to realize non-substantiality with non-substantiality? Answered: Subhuti, that is not so. Asked: Blessed One, if it is substantiality, can it be beneficial to realize substantiality with substantiality? Answered: Subhuti, that is not so. Asked: Blessed One, if non-substantiality cannot realize substantiality, and substantiality cannot realize non-substantiality, and non-substantiality cannot realize non-substantiality, and substantiality cannot realize substantiality, then isn't it that there is no attainment and no realization? Answered: Subhuti, there is realization, but not through these four ways of realization. Asked: Blessed One, then what kind of realization is it? Answered: Just as it is neither substantiality nor non-substantiality, seeing equality in that way is realization, because it is without elaboration and free from elaboration. For whom there is no such elaboration, that is realization. After saying this, the venerable Subhuti asked the Blessed One as follows: Blessed One, what is the elaboration of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva? Answered: Subhuti, form is permanent, calling it permanent and impermanent is the elaboration of a Bodhisattva. Feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness are permanent, calling them permanent and impermanent is the elaboration of a Bodhisattva. Form is pleasure, calling it pleasure and suffering
