What should a Bodhisattva Mahasattva keep in mind? The Lord replied: Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who has newly generated the mind should keep in mind all-knowingness. Asked: World Honored One, what is the nature of all-knowingness? What is the object? What is the function? What is the aspect? What is the characteristic? The Lord replied: Subhuti, all-knowingness is without nature, without self-nature, without characteristics, spontaneously accomplished, without birth, and without cessation. Subhuti, you ask: What is the object of all-knowingness? What is the function? What is the aspect? What is the characteristic? Subhuti, the object of all-knowingness is without nature. The function is mindfulness. The aspect is peaceful. The characteristic is without self-nature. Subhuti, the object of all-knowingness is like that. The function is like that. The aspect is like that. The characteristic is like that. Asked: World Honored One, is it only all-knowingness that has no nature? Or does form also have no nature? Are feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness also without nature? Similarly, are inner and outer dharmas also without nature? The four dhyanas, the four immeasurables, the four formless absorptions, the four mindfulnesses, the four right exertions, the four legs of magical power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven branches of enlightenment, the eightfold noble path, the samadhi of emptiness, the samadhi of signlessness, the samadhi of wishlessness, the eight liberations, the nine successive abidings, the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha, great loving-kindness, great compassion, great joy, great equanimity, and supernormal knowledge

First, and the second supernormal knowledge, and the third, and the fourth, and the fifth, and the sixth, and the conditioned realm, and the unconditioned realm, are they also without substance? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, even the all-knowing itself is without substance. Form, and feeling, and perception, and formations, and consciousness are also without substance. Even between the conditioned realm and the unconditioned realm, there is no substance. Why is that? Subhuti, the all-knowing itself has no intrinsic nature. Subhuti, whatever has no intrinsic nature, that is because it is without substance. He asked: Blessed One, for what reason does the all-knowing itself have no intrinsic nature? He said: Subhuti, there is no intrinsic nature arising from aggregation, and whatever has no intrinsic nature arising from aggregation, that is without substance. Subhuti, by these terms, all phenomena are of the nature of being without substance. Subhuti, moreover, all phenomena are of the nature of emptiness. All phenomena are of the nature of being without characteristics and without aspirations. Subhuti, moreover, all phenomena are of the nature of Suchness. All phenomena are of the nature of the ultimate reality. All phenomena are of the nature of the realm of Dharma. Subhuti, by these terms, all phenomena should be understood as being of the nature of being without substance. After he had spoken thus, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, if all phenomena are of the nature of being without substance, then with what skillful means does the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, who has generated the first thought, practice the perfection of generosity, and also purify the Buddha-fields, and also ripen sentient beings? How does he practice the perfection of morality, and the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, and the perfection of meditation, and the perfection of wisdom, and from the first dhyana to the fourth dhyana, and from loving-kindness to equanimity, and from the sphere of infinite space to non-perception.
