What is meant by "Thusness"? Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas, abiding in this Thusness, will attain all-knowingness; therefore, it is called "Thusness." Subhuti, therefore, Thusness should be taken as the standard, and Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas should be known to be the Tathagata. Subhuti, Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas should thus train in the Perfection of Wisdom of Thusness. Subhuti, when Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas train in the Perfection of Wisdom of Thusness, they will become skilled in understanding the faculties of all beings, and will gain skill in perfecting the faculties. They will also know the actions of beings. Knowing the actions of beings, they will perfect the knowledge of aspiration. When the knowledge of aspiration is perfected, they will purify the knowledge of the three times. When the knowledge of the three times is purified, they will practice the conduct of a Bodhisattva and benefit beings. Benefiting beings, they will purify the Buddha-fields. Purifying the Buddha-fields, they will attain all-knowingness. Attaining all-knowingness, they will turn the Wheel of Dharma. Having turned the Wheel of Dharma, they will establish beings in the three vehicles. Having established beings in the three vehicles, they will cause them to be completely extinguished in the realm of Nirvana without remainder of aggregates. Subhuti, thus Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas, seeing all these qualities and benefits, should also generate the mind for unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, and should also induce others to generate the mind for unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment. Then, the Venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Lord, those Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas who practice this profound Perfection of Wisdom as taught, they are the world with gods, humans, and asuras,

Where is the place to pay homage? The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, it is so, it is so. As you said, those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who practice this profound Perfection of Wisdom as taught, they are the place to be worshiped by the world with its gods, men, and asuras." The questioner said: "Venerable Lord, how much merit will the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who has generated the first thought, seeking to realize unexcelled, perfect enlightenment for the sake of all sentient beings, accumulate?" After this question, the Blessed One said to the venerable Subhuti: "Subhuti, in a thousand-world realm, if all sentient beings, as many as there are, were to abide in the stage of a Hearer, or were to abide in the stage of a Solitary Buddha, would those sentient beings generate much merit?" The questioner said: "Blessed One, much indeed. Well-Gone One, much indeed. Blessed One, immeasurable indeed. Well-Gone One, unquantifiable indeed." The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, the merit of sentient beings belonging to the thousand-world realm, whether they are practitioners of the Hearer Vehicle or practitioners of the Solitary Buddha Vehicle, whatever object of merit there may be, and the object of merit of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who has generated the first thought, compared to these two, the object of merit of the Hearer Vehicle or the Solitary Buddha Vehicle of the thousand-world realm does not even approach a hundredth part of the object of merit of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who has generated the first thought, not even up to a billionth part. Why is that? Because Hearers and practitioners of the Solitary Buddha Vehicle arise from Bodhisattvas, but Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas do not arise from Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. Similarly, apply this: In the three-thousand great thousand world realm, all sentient beings who are Hearers and practitioners of the Solitary Buddha Vehicle, as many as there are, are all first

The merit of those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who have generated the first thought of enlightenment cannot even come close to a fraction of their merit. Rabjor, let alone the beings in the three-thousand great thousand world system who are Hearers and Pratyekabuddhas. Rabjor, if all the beings dwelling in the three-thousand great thousand world system were to abide in the White-Vision Ground, their merit would not even come close to a fraction of a hundred thousand kotis of the merit of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who has generated the first thought of enlightenment. Let alone those who abide in the White-Vision Ground. If all those beings belonging to the three-thousand great thousand world system were to abide in the Lineage Ground, their merit would not even come close to a fraction of a hundred thousand kotis of the merit of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who has generated the first thought of enlightenment. Similarly, apply this to the Eighth Ground, the Vision Ground, the Thinned Ground, the Ground of Freedom from Desire, the Ground of Those Who Have Realized What Has Been Done, and even those who have entered the Pratyekabuddha Ground, their merit would not even come close to a fraction of a hundred thousand kotis of the merit of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who has generated the first thought of enlightenment. Rabjor, if all the beings dwelling in the three-thousand great thousand world system were to enter the faultless path of a Bodhisattva, their merit would not even come close to a fraction of a hundred thousand kotis of the merit of a Bodhisattva who has entered the path to enlightenment. Rabjor, if all the beings dwelling in the three-thousand great thousand world system were to enter the path to enlightenment, their merit would not even come close to a fraction of a hundred thousand kotis of the merit of a Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, nor would it come close in terms of cause or example.
