Chapter Sixty: Entrustment Chapter Sixty: Entrustment Then, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, said this to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, is what I have said and shown in this way, speaking in accordance with what the Blessed One has said, being a speaker of the Dharma, and a correct expression of the Dharma that is in accordance with the Dharma?" The Blessed One replied: "Kauśika, what you have said and shown in this way is speaking in accordance with what the Tathāgata has said, being a speaker of the Dharma, and expressing the Dharma in accordance with the Dharma." Indra asked: "Blessed One, all the confidence of the venerable Subhūti is based on emptiness, and confidence arises from it, and it is based on the absence of characteristics and the absence of aspirations, and confidence arises from it, and it is based on the four mindfulnesses and the factors of enlightenment, and confidence arises from it. It is amazing!" Having asked this, the Blessed One said this to the Lord of the Gods, Indra: "Kauśika, because this Subhūti abides in emptiness, he does not even perceive the perfection of generosity itself, let alone those who practice the perfection of generosity. Similarly, he does not even perceive the perfection of wisdom itself, let alone those who practice the perfection of wisdom. He does not even perceive the mindfulnesses themselves, let alone those who meditate on the mindfulnesses. Similarly, he does not even perceive the path itself, let alone those who will practice the path. Similarly, he does not even perceive the concentrations, immeasurables, liberations, samādhis, and attainments themselves, let alone those who meditate on the concentrations, immeasurables, liberations, samādhis, and attainments. He does not even perceive the powers themselves, let alone those who meditate on the powers. He does not even perceive the fearlessnesses themselves, let alone those who manifest the fearlessnesses. He does not even perceive the individual perfect knowledges themselves, let alone those who

Furthermore, what need is there to mention the actualization of all perfect knowledges? If great love itself is not perceived, what need is there to mention those who will abide in great love? If great compassion itself is not perceived, what need is there to mention those who will abide in great compassion? If the unmixed qualities of the Buddhas themselves are not perceived, what need is there to mention those who will actualize the unmixed qualities of the Buddhas? If enlightenment itself is not perceived, what need is there to mention those who will awaken to perfect complete enlightenment? If all-knowingness itself is not perceived, what need is there to mention those who will attain all-knowingness? If the Thus-Gone One himself is not perceived, what need is there to mention those who will become Thus-Gone Ones? If the unborn itself is not perceived, what need is there to mention those who will directly realize the unborn? If the marks themselves are not perceived, what need is there to mention whose bodies will manifest the marks? If the excellent signs themselves are not perceived, what need is there to mention whose bodies will manifest the excellent signs? Why is that? Kauśika, the monk Subhūti abides in the emptiness of all phenomena. Kauśika, the monk Subhūti abides in the signless, abides in emptiness, abides in the signless, and abides in the wishless. Kauśika, the abiding of the monk Subhūti is such. Kauśika, the abiding of the monk Subhūti does not even approach a hundredth part of the abiding of a bodhisattva-mahāsattva who practices the perfection of wisdom, nor does it approach a thousandth part, nor does it approach a hundred thousandth part, nor does it approach a hundred millionth part, nor does it approach in number, part, calculation, example, or cause. Why is that? Apart from the abiding of the Thus-Gone One, the abiding of a bodhisattva-mahāsattva who practices the perfection of wisdom, and the abiding of the śrāvakas and solitary Buddhas

Among those, what is the abode of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom? It is because it is called supreme, it is called pre-eminent, it is called especially superior, it is called excellent, it is called most excellent, it is called abundant, it is called unsurpassed, and it is called incomparable. Kauśika. Therefore, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who wishes to become the most supreme of all sentient beings should abide in this way, that is, by abiding in this very abode of the Perfection of Wisdom. Why is that? Kauśika. A Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom transcends the grounds of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, enters the faultless ground of Bodhisattvas, perfects all the Buddha-dharmas, attains omniscience, and having attained omniscience, also obtains the habitual tendencies of the Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, and the abandonment of all connections and afflictions. Then, from that very assembly, the gods of the Thirty-Three Realms took Mandārava flowers and scattered them upon the Blessed One. They scattered them, they scattered them exceedingly. Six thousand monks also rose from their seats, arranged their upper robes over one shoulder, knelt on their right knees, and with palms joined, bowed towards the Blessed One without blinking their eyes. By the power of the Buddha, their palms were filled with Mandārava flowers, and they scattered those Mandārava flowers upon the Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One. They scattered them, they scattered them exceedingly. When they scattered, scattered, and scattered exceedingly, they spoke these words: "Blessed One, by this root of virtue, may we abide in this excellent abode that is not the abode of all Hearers and Solitary Buddhas." Thus they spoke. Then, the Blessed One, knowing the thoughts of those monks, smiled at that time. This is the nature of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones: when the Blessed One smiles,
