Chapter Fifty-Four: Showing the Chapter on Skillful Means in Meditation Chapter Fifty-Four: Showing the Chapter on Skillful Means in Meditation Then, the Venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, become fully familiar with emptiness? How does he enter into the Samadhi of emptiness? How does he become fully familiar with the signless? How does he enter into the Samadhi of the signless? How does he become fully familiar with the wishless? How does he enter into the Samadhi of the wishless? How does he become fully familiar with the Noble Eightfold Path? How does he cultivate the Noble Eightfold Path? How does he become fully familiar with the Dharmas of the aspects of Enlightenment? How does he cultivate the Dharmas of the aspects of Enlightenment?" After he had spoken, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Subhuti: "Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, should separately examine form as empty. Feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness should also be separately examined as empty. Similarly, combining them, up to the desire realm should also be separately examined as empty. The form realm and the formless realm should also be separately examined as empty. In whatever way he separately examines, so that the mind does not become distracted, he should examine separately in that way. Because the mind is without distraction, he does not truly see the Dharma that is to be directly realized. Because he does not truly see that Dharma, he does not directly realize it. Why is that? Like this, because he diligently trains in the Dharmas that are empty of their own nature, therefore, he does not expound any Dharma. Because he sees all those who directly realize, what is directly realized, and the Dharma by which one directly realizes, as neither entirely possessing nor entirely not possessing."

Having spoken thus, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Lord, the Blessed One has said, 'A Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should not directly realize emptiness.' Lord, as it has been said, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abide in emptiness without directly realizing emptiness?" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva contemplates emptiness with all kinds of excellence, he should not think, 'I will directly realize it,' but he should think, 'I will familiarize myself with it.' He should think, 'This is not the time for direct realization, but the time for familiarization.' A Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, when not in meditative equipoise, attaches his mind to the object of focus. In the interim, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva does not fall away from the factors of enlightenment, nor does he directly realize the undefiled dharmas. Why is that? Because a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva possesses such great wisdom. He abides in the factors of enlightenment and knows thus: 'This is the time for familiarization, not the time for direct realization.' Subhuti, thus does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva act in the Perfection of Wisdom. Thus, this is the time for the Perfection of Giving, this is the time for the Perfection of Morality, Patience, Diligence, Meditation, and Wisdom, this is the time for cultivating the mindfulnesses, this is the time for cultivating the eightfold noble path, this is the time for cultivating the samadhi of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, this is the time for attaining the ten powers of the Tathagata, this is the time for attaining the four fearlessnesses, this is the time for attaining the four analytical knowledges, this is the time for attaining great love and great compassion."

It is a time for action, but this is not the time to directly realize the fruit of stream-entry. This is not the time to directly realize even the state of an Arhat or the wisdom of a Pratyekabuddha. This is not the time to attain omniscience and to become fully familiar with it. One should examine and analyze in this way. Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva thus engages in the Perfection of Wisdom, they familiarize themselves with emptiness and abide in emptiness, and they familiarize themselves with the signless and the wishless, and abide in the signless and the wishless, but they do not directly realize the cultivation of the Noble Eightfold Path. Similarly, applying this, they meditate on the mindfulnesses and abide in the mindfulnesses, but they do not directly realize them. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva thus familiarizes themselves with the factors of enlightenment, cultivates the factors of enlightenment, and abides in the factors of enlightenment, but they do not directly realize the fruit of stream-entry up to the state of an Arhat. Subhuti, it is like this: for example, if there is a man who is brave, energetic, extremely steadfast, of excellent form, beautiful, pleasing to behold, endowed with the supreme and flourishing best of colors, with a very refined physique, carrying solid weapons, extremely accomplished in the sixty-four arts, having understood and comprehended all crafts and occupations, pleasing and delightful to many beings, then whatever he undertakes, he will have great gains in all of them. With those gains, he treats many people with kindness, respects them, honors them, and makes offerings to them. He experiences satisfaction, great joy, happiness, and great bliss. Then, for some need, he leads his parents, sons, and daughters into a solitary wilderness, a place that frightens children and makes their hair stand on end. Even after that man has entered there,
