If, due to attachment, one abides in the state of an Arhat, (someone) might say, 'How could you possibly realize the unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment?' If a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva thinks, 'Alas! This is Mara the Evil One, showing a path that only appears to be so,' and the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, they will not turn back from the unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment, nor will they fall into the level of a Hearer or a Solitary Realizer. Furthermore, if they think, 'It is impossible for a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices the Perfection of Giving and meditates up to the wisdom of all-knowingness not to realize the unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment. There is no such possibility; it is impossible,' then, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who possesses these characteristics, these signs, and these marks should be known as irreversible. Subhuti, furthermore, an irreversible Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom thinks, 'If I learn as the Tathagata has taught, and if I abide without abandoning those practices and with mindfulness endowed with the perfections, then I will not completely lose the Perfection of Giving, and likewise, I will not completely lose up to all-knowingness.' If they think in this way, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who possesses these characteristics, these signs, and these marks should be known as irreversible. Subhuti, furthermore, a reversible Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom thinks, 'Whoever understands the actions of Mara will not completely fall away from the unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment.' If they think in this way, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who possesses these characteristics, these signs, and these marks is irreversible from the unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment.

It should be known as such. Having spoken thus, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Lord, for what reason is it that a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who is irreversible, retreats from that, and is therefore called irreversible?" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, it is a retreat from the perception of form, a retreat from the perception of feeling, a retreat from the perception of perception, a retreat from the perception of formation, a retreat from the perception of consciousness, a retreat from the perception of realms, a retreat from the perception of sources, a retreat from the perception of desire, a retreat from the perception of hatred, a retreat from the perception of delusion, a retreat from the perception of views, a retreat from the perception of perfections, a retreat from the perception of emptiness, a retreat from the perception of mindfulness, likewise even from the perception between a Hearer and a Solitary Buddha, a retreat from the perception between Buddhas. Why is that? Thus, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who is irreversible, because all dharmas are empty of their own nature, enters into the faultlessness of a Bodhisattva. Because he does not focus on even the slightest dharma, he does not produce it. Therefore, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who is irreversible is called one who has obtained the acceptance of non-arising dharmas. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who possesses those aspects, those signs, and those characteristics should be known as irreversible." From the Eighty Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita, it is called the chapter on Irreversibility, the forty-ninth chapter. The forty-ninth chapter, the chapter on Irreversibility.
