Chapter Forty-three: Inconceivable Chapter Forty-three: Inconceivable Then, in the great three-thousandfold world realm, the sons of gods residing in the desire and form realms, carrying celestial sandalwood powder, went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, they bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, those sons of gods residing in the desire and form realms said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, this teaching of the Perfection of Wisdom is profound! Blessed One, why is the Perfection of Wisdom profound?" The Blessed One replied: "Sons of gods, this Perfection of Wisdom is profound because it is the nature of emptiness. Sons of gods, the Perfection of Wisdom is the nature of signlessness, the nature of wishlessness, the nature of non-manifestation, the nature of non-arising, the nature of non-cessation, the nature of non-affliction, the nature of non-purification, the nature of non-thingness, the nature of self-nature, the nature of non-abiding, the nature of non-annihilation, the nature of non-permanence, the nature of non-oneness, the nature of non-difference, the nature of non-coming, the nature of non-going, and the nature of space. Therefore, it is profound. Sons of gods, because this Perfection of Wisdom has such a nature, the Thus-Gone One teaches it in worldly terms, but in ultimate truth, it is not so. Sons of gods, these natures cannot be disturbed by the world, including gods, humans, and asuras. Why is that? Because the world, including gods, humans, and asuras, is also of that nature. Sons of gods, nature does not disturb nature. Nature does not know nature. Nature does not know non-nature. Nature

Because there is no characteristic, one does not understand characteristics. Because there is no characteristic, one does not understand the absence of characteristics. Thus, whatever is a characteristic and whatever is the absence of a characteristic, in both of these, there is no essence of what knows, what is known, and what is known by. Sons of the gods, these characteristics are not manifestly accumulated by form, nor are they manifestly accumulated by feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness. They are not manifestly accumulated by the perfection of generosity, nor are they manifestly accumulated by the perfections of ethics, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom. They are not manifestly accumulated by all emptiness, nor are they manifestly accumulated by the dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment. They are not manifestly accumulated by the powers, the fearlessnesses, the individual perfect knowledges, and the unmixed dharmas of the Buddhas. They are not manifestly accumulated by the all-knowingness itself. Sons of the gods, these characteristics are not people, nor non-humans, nor those with outflows, nor those without outflows, nor worldly beings, nor those beyond the world, nor conditioned things, nor unconditioned things, because all characteristics are without characteristics. Sons of the gods, if someone says, "The characteristic of space is like this," is that speaking with truthful speech? The sons of the gods replied, "Blessed One, it is not speaking with truthful speech." Why is that? Blessed One, because the realm of space is not conditioned, space does not have any characteristic. The Blessed One said, "Sons of the gods, whether the Tathāgatas appear or do not appear, the realm of characteristics abides just as the realm of non-characteristics abides. Therefore, the Tathāgata, having perfectly awakened to complete perfect enlightenment, is called Tathāgata, Tathāgata." The sons of the gods asked, "Blessed One, which characteristics are manifestly accumulated?

The wisdom of the Tathagata who has attained perfect Buddhahood is without attachment, and the nature in which the Tathagata abides, the nature by which the Tathagata reveals all natures, the perfect enlightenment of the Tathagata, these are profound. Blessed One, the Tathagata has perfectly revealed the Prajnaparamita, and has perfectly revealed all natures. Blessed One, in this way, by practicing what has the Tathagata become perfectly enlightened with the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and after becoming perfectly enlightened with the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, he has also perfectly distinguished all natures, from the nature of form, and feelings, and perceptions, and formations, and the distinctions of the nature of consciousness, up to the distinctions of all natures, and up to the nature of all-knowingness. This sphere of activity of the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, the Prajnaparamita, is profound and wonderful. Then the Blessed One spoke to the sons of the gods who dwell in desire and form, saying: Sons of the gods, form is the nature of being formable, but form itself is also perfectly enlightened by the Tathagata as without nature. Likewise, feeling is the nature of experiencing, perception is the nature of grasping, formations are the nature of manifesting, and consciousness is the nature of individually distinguishing. That too is perfectly enlightened by the Tathagata as without nature. The aggregates are the nature of suffering, and they too are perfectly enlightened by the Tathagata as without nature. The elements are the nature of being like poisonous snakes, and they too are perfectly enlightened by the Tathagata as without nature. The sense bases are the nature of the gate of birth, and they too are perfectly enlightened by the Tathagata as without nature. Dependent origination is the nature of assembly.
