Chapter Thirty-Three: Dedication Chapter Thirty-Three: Dedication Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya said to the Venerable Subhuti: "Venerable Subhuti, whatever merit arises from the Bodhisattva Mahasattva's rejoicing, having made it common with all sentient beings, it is dedicated to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Moreover, it is dedicated in a non-apprehending manner. Then, whatever merit arises from all sentient beings' rejoicing, and those who have truly entered the Hearer Vehicle, and those who have truly entered the Pratyekabuddha Vehicle, the merit arising from their generosity, the merit arising from their ethics, and the merit arising from their meditation, compared to that, the merit arising from the Bodhisattva's rejoicing, having made it common with all sentient beings, and dedicated it to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, that is called supreme, called excellent, called principal, called Śreṣṭha, called most Śreṣṭha, called abundant, called unsurpassed, called incomparable. Why is that? Because all the merit arising from the Hearers and Pratyekabuddha Vehicle practitioners' generosity, ethics, and meditation, is done for the sake of taming themselves, pacifying themselves, and completely liberating themselves. Even the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, are for the sake of taming themselves, pacifying themselves, and completely liberating themselves. But the merit arising from the Bodhisattva's rejoicing is dedicated to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete

Because it has been completely dedicated to Bodhi. Then, the venerable Subhuti said this to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya: Bodhisattva Mahasattva, in the countless immeasurable worlds of the east, in each of those worlds, the countless immeasurable Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, who have passed into Nirvana, from the initial generation of the mind until the complete enlightenment of unsurpassed perfect and complete Bodhi, and until the complete passing into Nirvana in the realm of Nirvana without remainder of aggregates, and until the time when the sacred Dharma has not perished, whatever virtuous roots are endowed with the six perfections, and the merit-deeds arising from the giving of those Hearer Vehicle practitioners, and those arising from moral discipline, and whatever merit-deeds arise from meditation, and the uncontaminated virtuous roots of those who are learning and those who are not learning, and the aggregates of moral discipline of those Tathagatas, the aggregates of concentration, the aggregates of wisdom, the aggregates of liberation, and whatever aggregates of the knowledge and vision of liberation, and whatever is intended for benefit, and great compassion, and the immeasurable, countless Buddha-dharmas, and whatever Dharma is taught by those Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, and whatever virtuous roots of those who have attained the fruit of stream-entry, up to Arhatship, up to the attainment of solitary enlightenment, and whatever entering into the faultless path of the Bodhisattva, and whatever virtuous roots are generated by those who, when the Tathagatas reside or pass into Nirvana, all of those are manifestly gathered together, and rejoiced with the supreme rejoicing, the chief of rejoicing, and especially excellent, and the utmost, and the supreme utmost, and abundant, and supreme, and unsurpassed, and incomparable, and unequaled, and equal and unequal rejoicing.

After rejoicing, may the root of virtue arising from the moment of rejoicing, shared with all sentient beings, be accomplished for the sake of attaining the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Thus, completely dedicate the root of virtue to the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. When a Mahayana practitioner speaks thus, and the mind makes such a complete dedication, what object and what things give rise to that mind, and how do those sons of good family grasp those objects, and do they exist as they are and serve as an object? Maitreya said: Venerable Subhuti, those things and those objects are not as those sons of good family of the Mahayana have grasped them, completely dedicating them to the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, nor are they objects to be grasped. Subhuti said: If those who have no things and no objects, in all the ten directions of the universe, grasp all the Buddhas, the Bhagavat who dwell there, and from the time they first generate the mind of enlightenment, until the holy Dharma abides, all the roots of virtue, and all the roots of virtue of the Shravaka Vehicle practitioners and non-practitioners, are all gathered together and completely dedicated to the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, then, the inverted perception of grasping permanence in impermanence, and the inverted mind, the inverted view, and the perception of grasping happiness in suffering, grasping self in selflessness, grasping purity in impurity, and the inverted mind, the inverted view, would they not also become inverted in the same way? If things exist as they are, and objects exist as they are, then enlightenment should also be like that, and the mind should also be like that. The perfection of generosity, the perfection of ethics, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, and the perfection of wisdom should also be the same. The thirty-seven factors of enlightenment should also be the same.
