Seventeenth Chapter: The Chapter on Purifying the Grounds. Seventeenth Chapter: The Chapter on Purifying the Grounds. The Eight Thousand Verse Prajñāpāramitā, Volume Thirteen. Subhūti, how do you say that a Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva properly enters the Great Vehicle? Subhūti, here, a Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva who practices the six perfections ascends from ground to ground. How does a Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva who practices the six perfections ascend from ground to ground? It is like this: all dharmas are without change. Why is that? Because no dharma comes, goes, changes, or closely changes. However, all dharmas do not take pride in any ground, nor do they despise it, and they also purify the ground, but they do not truly see that ground. What is the purification of the ground of a Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva? Subhūti, a Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva, abiding in the first ground, the Joyful Ground, should perform ten purifications of the ground. What are the ten? Having thoroughly purified the superior intention, because of not fixating on actions and not fixating on characteristics; thoroughly purifying the objects of beneficial actions; because of not fixating on sentient beings, thoroughly purifying equanimity towards all sentient beings; because of not fixating on the act of giving, the giver, and the receiver, thoroughly purifying generosity; because of not being arrogant about these, thoroughly purifying reliance on virtuous friends; because of not fixating on all dharmas, thoroughly purifying the seeking of dharma; because of not fixating on household life, thoroughly purifying continuous manifestation; because of not fixating on the signs of the major and minor marks, thoroughly purifying the desire for the Buddha's body; because of not fixating on the distinctions of dharmas, thoroughly purifying the explanation of dharma; because of not fixating on the existence of dharmas, thoroughly purifying the certain destruction of pride; because of not fixating on words, thoroughly purifying truthful speech. Subhūti, a Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva, abiding in the first ground, thus purifies.

These ten should be practiced. Subhuti, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abides in the second ground, they should always keep eight dharmas in mind and diligently apply themselves to them. What are the eight? They are: Completely pure morality, gratitude and recognition of kindness, abiding in the power of patience, experiencing supreme joy and delight, not abandoning all sentient beings, manifesting great compassion, respectfully honoring the gurus with faith, providing great service with the perception of the teacher as a Buddha, and diligently seeking the perfections. Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abides in the second ground, they should always keep these eight dharmas in mind and diligently apply themselves to them. Subhuti, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abides in the third ground, they should abide in five dharmas. What are the five? They are: Not being satisfied with much learning, and not being overly attached to the letters; explaining the giving of Dharma without material gain, and not becoming arrogant because of it; generating roots of virtue to purify the Buddha-field completely, and dedicating them completely, without becoming arrogant because of it; not being weary of countless cycles of existence, and not becoming arrogant because of it; abiding in shame and conscientiousness, and not becoming arrogant because of it. Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abides in the third ground, they should abide in these five dharmas. Subhuti, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abides in the fourth ground, they should properly take up and abide in ten dharmas, and they should not abandon them. What are the ten? They are: Not abandoning abiding in solitude, having few desires, being content, the qualities of training, not abandoning reducing possessions, not abandoning the training, criticizing the qualities of desire, generating a mind associated with nirvana, completely abandoning all possessions, not being distracted in mind, and not looking at all things. Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abides in the fourth ground, they should not abandon these ten dharmas, and properly
