is without substance. The fruit of stream-enterer is without substance. The fruit of once-returner, the fruit of non-returner, the Arhat himself, and perfect enlightenment are without substance. Up to the state of all-knowingness itself is without substance. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Do you think that by means of a dharma that is without substance, one can attain a dharma that is without substance? He replied: Blessed One, that is not so. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, in that case, whatever is without substance, and the dharma that is the path, both are neither possessed nor not possessed. Without form, invisible, without obstruction, of one nature, thus it is without nature. Subhuti, in this regard, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, with skillful means, he liberates beings who have the four inversions, who are attached to the five aggregates, who perceive permanence in impermanence, who perceive pleasure in suffering, who perceive self in non-self, who perceive beauty in ugliness, from their attachment to substance. Subhuti asked: Blessed One, what is the reason? Children and ordinary people are attached to substance, becoming attached. Are those four kinds of substance, like that, not inverted? If they are not like that, how can they become attached? And how can they be liberated from the cycle of five kinds of descendants caused by Sukara? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, where does it abide except in inversion? The substance that can become attached from children and ordinary people does not even exist as small as the part occupied by the tip of a hair. Subhuti, therefore, in any case, in order for this meaning to be clear and complete, and in order for the wise to understand, I will explain it to you with an example. Subhuti, what do you think? In what is seen in a dream, where does what is seen in a dream abide, and is there any substance like that which is fully enjoyed with the five objects of desire? He replied: Blessed One, even the dream itself does not exist, so what is seen in the dream.

Abiding and enjoying the five desirable qualities, what need is there to mention anything else? There is not! The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Is there any worldly, or transcendental, or defiled, or undefiled, or compounded, or uncompounded dharma that is not like a dream? He replied: Blessed One, there is no worldly, or transcendental, or defiled, or undefiled, or compounded, or uncompounded dharma that is not like a dream. The Blessed One said: Is there a cycle of five destinies in a dream? He replied: Blessed One, there is not. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Is there such a path to be cultivated in a dream that it neither becomes completely afflicted nor becomes completely purified? He replied: Blessed One, there is not. Blessed One, that is not a real thing, it cannot be designated by all speech, sound, words, and letters. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? In the appearance of an image in a mirror, from what does the manifestation of action arise? And by the manifestation of action, do sentient beings go to hell, or go to the realm of animals, or go to the world of Yama, or become humans and gods? Is there such a thing? He replied: Blessed One, there is not. Blessed One, that is nothing more than deceiving children, it is not a real thing. If the image itself does not exist, then how can there be a manifestation of action, and how can the manifestation of action cause sentient beings to go to hell, or go to the realm of animals, or go to the world of Yama, or become humans and gods? What need is there to mention anything else? There is not! The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think?
