Chapter Sixty-Seven Chapter Sixty-Seven Then, the venerable Subhuti asked the Blessed One: "Blessed One, is a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva a definite one? Or is he an indefinite one?" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is a definite one, not an indefinite one." He asked: "Is he a definite one in the aggregate of a Hearer, or in the aggregate of a Pratyekabuddha, or in the aggregate of a Buddha? In which aggregate is he a definite one?" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is not a definite one in the aggregate of a Hearer, nor is he a definite one in the aggregate of a Pratyekabuddha. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is a definite one in the aggregate of a Buddha." He asked: "Blessed One, is a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who has produced the first thought a definite one? Or is a non-relapser a definite one? Or is a last existence one a definite one?" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who has produced the first thought is a definite one. A non-relapser is a definite one. One who is bound by one existence is a definite one." He asked: "Blessed One, will a definite Bodhisattva-Mahasattva be born in the evil destinies or not?" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, that is not so. Subhuti, a definite Bodhisattva-Mahasattva will not be born in the evil destinies. Subhuti, what do you think? Will a Stream-enterer, or a Once-returner, or a Non-returner, or an Arhat, or a Pratyekabuddha be born in the evil destinies?" He replied: "Blessed One, that is not so." The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, likewise, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, from the time he produces the first thought, takes up giving, keeps the precepts, practices patience, exerts himself, enters into concentration, cultivates wisdom, and abides for the sake of abandoning all non-virtuous dharmas, there is no possibility that he will be born in the evil destinies. There is no possibility that he will be born in the long-lived gods. Where is there such a thing as not practicing virtuous dharmas?"

There is no place of birth. There is no place of birth in a place that becomes foolish and dumb. There is no place of birth in a borderland of barbarians and untamed people without the fourfold assembly of followers. There is no place of birth in a lineage of wrong views. There is no place of birth where the sound of the Buddha is not heard, the sound of the Dharma is not heard, and the sound of the Sangha is not heard. There is no place to fall into views of non-action. Noble son, from the moment a Bodhisattva Mahasattva generates the first thought, takes hold of it, and truly enters into the supreme perfect enlightenment with heightened aspiration, there is no place for him to engage in the paths of the ten non-virtuous actions. Question. World Honored One, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who is so certain has such roots of virtue and is not born in an improper place, why is it that the Thus-Gone One himself has also shown instances of being born into the animal realm? Where were those roots of virtue at that time? The World Honored One said: Noble son, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva is not born into the animal realm due to non-virtuous actions, but whatever body benefits sentient beings, he intentionally takes on that body for the sake of sentient beings and completely embraces it. Noble son, through such skillful means, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva is born in the place of birth of animals, and even if someone comes to kill him, he completely gives up himself with supreme patience and does not harm those sentient beings. Do Arhats or Pratyekabuddhas have such skillful means? Noble son, therefore, in this way, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva perfects great compassion for the sake of sentient beings and for the sake of supreme perfect enlightenment, and even if he is born in the place of birth of animals, it should be understood that he is not defiled by the faults of the lineage of the place of birth of animals. Question. World Honored One, abiding in what kind of virtuous Dharma does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva completely take on such a body? The World Honored One

The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, there is no such thing as a virtuous dharma that a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva does not fully accomplish. The full accomplishment of all virtuous dharmas is unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment. Thus, from the moment a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva generates the mind of enlightenment until they sit at the essence of enlightenment, there is no virtuous dharma that they do not fully accomplish. There is no such thing as attaining unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment without fully accomplishing all virtuous dharmas; this is not possible. Therefore, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, from the moment they generate the mind of enlightenment, should train in fully accomplishing all virtuous dharmas; by training in this, they will attain omniscience. They will also completely abandon all habitual connections." He asked: "Blessed One, how is it that a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, possessing such noble, pure, and undefiled dharmas, could still be born in a bad rebirth or in the realm of animals?" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, is the Tathagata noble and undefiled?" He replied: "Blessed One, yes, that is so. The Sugata is indeed so, for the Tathagata is noble and without defilement." The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, does the Tathagata manifest beings belonging to the realm of animals, and having manifested them, perform the deeds of a Buddha? Is such a thing possible?" He replied: "Blessed One, it is possible." The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, does that make the Tathagata a being of the animal realm?" He replied: "Blessed One, that is not so." The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, does the Tathagata experience the suffering of the animal realm?" He replied: "Blessed One, that is not so." The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, in the same way, even though a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva possesses noble and undefiled dharmas, they may intentionally take on such a body,
