Chapter Sixty-Six Chapter Sixty-Six Then, the venerable Subhuti thought to himself: "If a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is to practice in such a way, then what kind of path to enlightenment does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva have?" Then, the Blessed One, having understood all the thoughts in the venerable Subhuti's mind, said to the venerable Subhuti: "Subhuti, the six perfections are the path of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Subhuti, all emptiness is the path of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. The thirty-seven factors of enlightenment are the path of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Subhuti, the four noble truths, as well as the dhyanas, the immeasurables, the formless absorptions, the liberations, the successive abidings in absorption, emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, supernormal knowledges, samadhis, and all the doors of dharani are the path of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. The ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, great compassion, and the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha are the path of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Subhuti, furthermore, all dharmas are the path of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Subhuti, what do you think? Are there any dharmas that a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should not train in, and by not training in which, one can awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment? Subhuti, there are no such dharmas that a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should not train in. A Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who does not train in all dharmas cannot attain omniscience. Subhuti asked: "Blessed One, if all dharmas are empty, how should a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva train in all dharmas? Blessed One, how should one say 'there are this many,' how should one say 'these are,' and the worldly...

These are. The supramundane dharmas are these. The dharmas with outflows are these. The dharmas without outflows are these. The conditioned dharmas are these. The unconditioned dharmas are these. The dharmas of ordinary beings are these. The dharmas of stream-enterers are these. The dharmas of once-returners, non-returners, and arhats are these. The dharmas of solitary buddhas are these. The dharmas of bodhisattvas are these. The dharmas of buddhas are these. Saying these things is continuing without elaboration. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, it is just so, it is just so. It is just so, all dharmas are emptiness. Subhuti, if all dharmas were not empty of inherent existence, then bodhisattvas, great beings, would not train in all dharmas, nor would they manifestly awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Subhuti, because all dharmas are empty, therefore bodhisattvas, great beings, train in all dharmas and manifestly awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Subhuti, you also say this: if all dharmas are empty of inherent existence, bodhisattvas, great beings, will do so much. Or saying these, the mundane dharmas are these. The dharmas of buddhas are these, thus distinguishing dharmas. Subhuti, do you think these sentient beings will know that all dharmas are empty in that way? If they know, then bodhisattvas, great beings, will not train in all dharmas, nor will they attain omniscience. Subhuti, these sentient beings

Because they do not understand that all dharmas are empty, therefore, Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas, having manifestly and completely awakened to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, expound the Dharma and teach the Dharma to sentient beings. Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the path of enlightenment, they should first thoroughly examine it in this way: Apart from manifest actions, there is no dharma here that is inherently existent. They should thoroughly examine it in this way. Because they understand the nature of all dharmas in this way, they do not become attached to any dharma, whether it be the perfections, or all emptinesses, or the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, or the noble truths, or meditative stabilizations, or immeasurables, or formless absorptions, or liberations, or successive abidings in meditative stabilization, or emptiness, or signlessness, or wishlessness, or superknowledges, or samadhi, or the doors of dharani, or the powers of the Tathagata, or fearlessnesses, or analytical knowledges, or great compassion, or the unshared dharmas of the Buddha, or the fruit of stream-entry, or the fruit of once-returner, or the fruit of non-returner, or the state of Arhatship, or self-enlightenment, or even unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Why is that? Because all dharmas are empty by their very nature, and emptiness does not become attached to emptiness. If emptiness itself is without an object, what need is there to mention becoming attached to emptiness? Subhuti, in this way, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, without attachment to all dharmas, engages in all dharmas. Abiding in this teaching, they observe what these sentient beings are doing, observing the conduct of sentient beings. They think to themselves: Alas, these sentient beings are engaging in unreal grasping! Alas, it is difficult to liberate these sentient beings from unreal grasping! Then, with skillful means and the perfection of wisdom,
