Chapter Sixty-Four Chapter Sixty-Four Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, if that is so, and there is truly nothing to grasp at in sentient beings, and there is no grasping at sentient beings, then for whose sake do Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas cultivate prajnaparamita?" After asking this, the Blessed One said to the venerable Subhuti: "Subhuti, Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas cultivate prajnaparamita with the limit of Suchness. Subhuti, if the boundary of Suchness were different, and the boundary of sentient beings were also different, then Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas would not cultivate prajnaparamita. Subhuti, the boundary of Suchness is not different, and the boundary of sentient beings is not different, therefore Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas cultivate prajnaparamita for the sake of sentient beings, and Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who cultivate prajnaparamita, without disturbing the boundary of Suchness, place sentient beings in the boundary of Suchness." Asked: "Blessed One, if that is so, and the boundary of Suchness is not different, and the boundary of sentient beings is not different, then will the boundary of Suchness abide in the boundary of Suchness? Blessed One, if the boundary of Suchness abides in the boundary of Suchness, then it would be self-nature abiding in self-nature. Blessed One, there is no self-nature abiding in self-nature. Blessed One, how do Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, when acting in prajnaparamita, place sentient beings in the boundary of Suchness?" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, the boundary of Suchness will not abide in the boundary of Suchness, nor will self-nature abide in self-nature. However, Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, when acting in prajnaparamita, skillfully place the boundary of sentient beings in the boundary of Suchness, and do not disturb the boundary of Suchness. Why is that? Because the boundary of sentient beings is not different, and the boundary of Suchness is not different.

It is so. In that case, the limit of sentient beings and the limit of reality are not two, they are indivisible. Asked: Blessed One, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, with skillful means, he places sentient beings in the limit of reality, but does not disturb the limit of reality. What kind of means is that? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, here, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, from the initial generation of the mind, he takes hold of sentient beings and places them in generosity. After placing them in generosity, the initial limit, the final limit, and the middle of that generosity are empty. Just as the initial limit of that generosity is empty, the final limit is also empty, and the middle is also empty, so the fruit of generosity is also empty, the giver is also empty, and the receiver is also shown to be empty. Son of good family, in this way, in the limit of reality, these things do not exist. Do not think that generosity is real, and the fruit of generosity is also real. Do not think that the giver is real, and the receiver is also real. Son of good family, when you do not think that generosity is real, and the fruit of generosity is also real, and do not think that the giver is real, and the receiver is also real, then your generosity will become nectar, become the fruit of nectar, and ultimately become nectar. Do not grasp form with this generosity, do not grasp feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness. Why is that? Because this generosity of yours is empty by generosity. Its fruit is also empty by fruit. The giver is also empty by giver. The receiver is also empty by receiver. In emptiness, generosity is not seen, and the fruit of generosity, the giver, and the receiver are not seen. Why is that? Because these dharmas are very empty by their very nature. Furthermore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, with skillful means, he places sentient beings in morality, saying to them: Son of good family, abandon killing, and

Turn away from bondage! Refrain from taking what is not given, engaging in sexual misconduct, speaking falsely, engaging in divisive speech, harsh speech, idle chatter, covetousness, malice, and abandon wrong views; turn away from wrong views! Noble son, these dharmas, however thoroughly examined, have no such inherent nature. Noble son, contemplate! What is the being to be killed? And what is the dharma of killing? What is taking what is not given? Engaging in sexual misconduct? Speaking falsely? Divisive speech? Harsh speech? Idle chatter? Covetousness? Malice? What is wrong view? What is labeled as wrong view? What is labeled with wrong view? And what is seen with wrong view? Thus he teaches and establishes them in morality. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva endowed with such skillful means, when practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, fully matures sentient beings. He shows them the fruits of generosity and morality, and explains that the fruits of generosity and morality are also empty of inherent nature. Noble son, knowing that the fruits of generosity and morality are empty of inherent nature, he does not cling to them. Being without clinging, he does not become agitated and generates wisdom. That wisdom also cuts off all latent tendencies and manifestations, and he completely passes into nirvana in the realm of nirvana without remainder. But this is not the ultimate truth of worldly convention. Why is that? Because in emptiness, no such dharma is found, whether it is someone who passes into nirvana or what is called passing into nirvana. That which is called nirvana is like this: emptiness that transcends extremes. Furthermore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, if he sees sentient beings harboring malice towards each other and filled with strife, he advises and instructs them thus: Noble son, cultivate patience.
