Chapter Fifty-Eight. Chapter Fifty-Eight. Furthermore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva enters the first dhyana, enters the second dhyana, enters the third dhyana, enters the fourth dhyana, enters the immeasurable states, and enters the formless absorptions, he does not fully grasp their ripening results. Why is that? Because he possesses skillful means. Through those skillful means, he knows that the dhyanas, immeasurable states, and formless absorptions are empty of their own nature. He knows that all dharmas are nonexistent, unborn, unfulfilled, and unestablished. Furthermore, Subhuti, from the moment a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva generates the initial thought of enlightenment, he maintains it closely. Possessing skillful means, although he practices the paths to be abandoned by seeing and meditation, he does not attain the fruit of stream-enterer, nor does he attain the fruit of once-returner, non-returner, or Arhatship, nor does he attain individual enlightenment. Why is that? Because he knows that all dharmas are empty of their own nature. He knows that all dharmas are nonexistent, unborn, unfulfilled, and unestablished. He practices the dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment, and he completely transcends the stages of the Hearers or the Solitary Buddhas. Subhuti, this is the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva's tolerance of the non-arising of dharmas. Furthermore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he enters the eight liberations, and he enters the nine successive abidings, but he does not attain the fruit of stream-enterer, nor the fruit of once-returner, nor the fruit of non-returner, nor Arhatship, nor individual enlightenment. Why is that? Because he knows that all dharmas are empty of their own nature. He knows that all dharmas are nonexistent and unborn. He knows that all dharmas are unfulfilled. He knows that all dharmas are unestablished. Subhuti.

Furthermore, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should be well acquainted with the ten powers of the Tathagata, well acquainted with the four fearlessnesses and the four analytical knowledges, well acquainted with the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, and well acquainted with great love and great compassion. However, until the Buddha-field is completely purified and sentient beings are completely matured, they will not attain omniscience. Subhuti, thus should the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practice the Perfection of Wisdom. He asked: "Bhagavan, although the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices such profound dharmas, they do not grasp at the ripening of karma. Are they endowed with supreme wisdom?" The Bhagavan replied: "Subhuti, it is so, it is so. The Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices such profound dharmas and does not grasp at the ripening of karma is endowed with supreme wisdom. Why is that? Subhuti, that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva does not deviate from inherent nature." He asked: "Bhagavan, what is meant by 'not deviating from inherent nature'?" The Bhagavan replied: "It does not deviate from non-existence. Subhuti, whatever is said as 'not deviating from inherent nature' means not deviating from the inherent nature of form, not deviating from the inherent nature of feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness, not deviating from the inherent nature of the sense bases, elements, and dependent origination, not deviating from the inherent nature of the Perfection of Giving, not deviating from the inherent nature of the Perfection of Morality, the Perfection of Patience, the Perfection of Diligence, the Perfection of Meditation, and the Perfection of Wisdom, not deviating from the inherent nature of inner emptiness, outer emptiness, and inner-outer emptiness, not deviating from the inherent nature of non-existence up to the inherent nature of emptiness, not deviating from the inherent nature of meditative concentration, the immeasurables, and the formless absorptions.

It does not deviate from the nature of mindfulness, it does not deviate from the right abandonment, it does not deviate from the foot of miraculous power, it does not deviate from the faculties, it does not deviate from the powers, it does not deviate from the limbs of enlightenment, and it does not deviate from the nature of the eightfold noble path. It does not deviate from the nature of the noble truths. It does not deviate from the nature of the samadhi of emptiness, it does not deviate from the samadhi of signlessness, and it does not deviate from the samadhi of wishlessness. It does not deviate from the nature of the eight liberations and the nine successive abidings, and it does not deviate from the nature of the superknowledges, samadhi, and the doors of dharani. It does not deviate from the nature of the Tathagata's powers and fearlessnesses, the separate correct knowledges, and the Buddha's unmixed dharmas. It does not deviate from the nature of great love and great compassion. Why is that? Subhuti, because in this way, whatever is the nature of these dharmas, that is non-thingness. Subhuti, because of non-thingness, it is not possible to realize complete enlightenment through non-thingness. He asked: Blessed One, what? Is it possible to realize complete enlightenment of non-thingness through non-thingness? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, it is not so. He asked: Then, is it possible to realize complete enlightenment of thingness through non-thingness? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, it is not so. He asked: Then, is it possible to realize complete enlightenment of thingness through thingness? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, it is not so. He asked: Then, is it possible to realize complete enlightenment of non-thingness through non-thingness? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, it is not so. He asked: Blessed One, then if it is so that thingness cannot realize non-thingness, and non-thingness cannot realize thingness, and thingness cannot realize thingness, and non-thingness cannot realize non-thingness, then Blessed One, for that reason there is no attainment, no realization.
