One should not practice with the thought that form and consciousness are for the sake of self. One should not practice with the thought that consciousness is not for the sake of self. One should not practice with the thought that the sense bases, elements, and dependent origination are for the sake of self. One should not practice with the thought that dependent origination is not for the sake of self. One should not practice with the thought that all the perfections, all emptiness, and the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment are for the sake of self. One should not practice with the thought that the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment are not for the sake of self. One should not practice with the thought that the noble truths, meditative stabilizations, immeasurables, formless absorptions, the eight liberations, the nine successive abidings, emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, superknowledges, samādhi, and the gateways of dhāraṇī are for the sake of self. One should not practice with the thought that the gateways of dhāraṇī are not for the sake of self. One should not practice with the thought that the ten powers of the Tathāgata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, and the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha are for the sake of self. One should not practice with the thought that the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha are not for the sake of self. One should not practice with the thought that unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment is for the sake of self. One should not practice with the thought that unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment is not for the sake of self. Why is that? Subhūti, when the Tathāgata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One, awakened to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, he did not perceive any dharma that needed to be attended to or not attended to. Furthermore, Subhūti, whether the Tathāgatas arise or do not arise, the suchness of dharmas, the fixedness of dharmas, the element of dharmas remains. It neither attends to anything nor does it not attend to anything. Subhūti, thus, a bodhisattva mahāsattva should abandon attending and not attending and practice the Perfection of Wisdom. Asked: Blessed One, for what reason?

Furthermore, in any Perfection of Wisdom, one does not make an object of what is meaningful, nor does one make an object of what is meaningless. The Lord said: Subhuti, It is like this: the Perfection of Wisdom does not make an object of any of the characteristics of conditioned or unconditioned things. Therefore, the Perfection of Wisdom is not something that is made an object of as meaningful, nor is it made an object of as meaningless. He asked: Lord, is not the unconditioned the meaning of all the Buddhas and all the noble disciples of the Buddhas? The Lord said: The unconditioned is indeed the meaning of all the Buddhas and all the noble disciples of the Buddhas, but it is not something that is close to benefiting or harming. Subhuti, it is like this: for example, the suchness of space is not something that is close to benefiting or harming anything. Subhuti, in the same way, the Perfection of Wisdom of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is not something that is close to benefiting or harming any dharma. He asked: Lord, then does not a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, by practicing the unconditioned, attain all-knowingness through the Perfection of Wisdom? The Lord said: Subhuti, it is so, it is so. A Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, by practicing this profound Perfection of Wisdom, attains all-knowingness, but not in the manner of duality. He asked: Lord, what is it? Is it by means of a non-dual dharma that one attains a non-dual dharma? The Lord said: That is not so. He asked: Then is it by means of a dual dharma that one attains a dual dharma? The Lord said: No. He asked: Then how does one attain it? The Lord said: When one does not perceive either a dual dharma or a non-dual dharma, then one attains it. Why is that? Because non-perception is attainment. Therefore, one cannot attain it by perception, nor can one attain it by non-perception. The Fifty-third Chapter of the Twenty-five Thousand Verse Perfection of Wisdom.
