This is a Non-Returner. This is an Arhat. This is a Pratyekabuddha. This is a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. This is a Tathagata, an Arhat, a Perfectly Enlightened Buddha. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, Stream-enterers, Once-Returners, Non-Returners, Arhats, Pratyekabuddhas, Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, and Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Enlightened Buddhas, all of these are distinguished by the Unconditioned. He asked: Blessed One, why is it not the Unconditioned? This is a Stream-enterer. This is a Once-Returner. This is a Non-Returner. This is an Arhat. This is a Pratyekabuddha. This is a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Is it necessary to distinguish these as Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Enlightened Buddhas? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, although the Unconditioned has no distinctions, it can still be measured and expressed according to words, but in the ultimate sense, it cannot be distinguished. Why is that? Because there is no designation of the path of words there. However, for those things that have not determined an end, they are designated at the later end. Subhuti, all dharmas are empty of their own nature, so neither the previous end is seen, nor is the later end seen. Subhuti, because those sentient beings do not understand that dharmas are empty of their own nature, it is said to them: This is called the previous end, this is called the later end. Subhuti, for all dharmas that are empty of their own nature, neither the previous nor the later end can be determined. Subhuti, in this way, since all dharmas are empty of their own nature, one should practice the Perfection of Wisdom. If one practices all dharmas that are empty of their own nature, one will not become attached to inner or outer dharmas, conditioned or unconditioned dharmas, the dharmas of Hearers, the dharmas of Pratyekabuddhas, or any dharma of dharmas. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, the Venerable Subhuti...

Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, Prajnaparamita, Prajnaparamita, why is it called Prajnaparamita?" The Blessed One replied: "Subhuti, this Prajnaparamita is the attainment of the supreme going beyond of all dharmas, therefore it is called Prajnaparamita. Furthermore, Subhuti, this Prajnaparamita causes all the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, as well as Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, and all the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Ones, to go beyond all dharmas, and will cause them to go beyond, therefore it is called Prajnaparamita. Furthermore, Subhuti, this Prajnaparamita distinguishes the supreme nature of all dharmas, and does not fixate on samsara for all those dharmas, therefore it is called Prajnaparamita. Furthermore, Subhuti, in this Prajnaparamita, Suchness is included, the limit of purity is included, and the Dharmadhatu is included, therefore it is called Prajnaparamita. Furthermore, Subhuti, this Prajnaparamita is not possessed or not possessed by any dharma, it is not demonstrable, nor is it non-demonstrable, it is not with obstruction, nor is it without obstruction. Why is that? Like this, this Prajnaparamita is formless, non-demonstrable, with no characteristic as its single characteristic. Furthermore, Subhuti, this Prajnaparamita generates all the fearlessness and all the appearances of all dharmas. Subhuti, this Prajnaparamita cannot be divided or stolen by Mara, or the gods of Mara's retinue, or the individuals of the Shravaka and Pratyekabuddha vehicles, or even by other heretics, or evil friends. This Prajnaparamita of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva cannot be cut off. Why is that? That is because, like this, it is emptiness by its own nature. For this Prajnaparamita, all those are not found.

That is why. Subhuti, therefore, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should practice the meaning of this Prajnaparamita. Furthermore, Subhuti, when the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the meaning of this profound Prajnaparamita, he should practice the meaning of impermanence, he should practice the meaning of suffering, he should practice the meaning of selflessness, he should practice the meaning of knowing suffering, and he should practice the meaning of knowing the origin, he should practice the meaning of knowing cessation, he should practice the meaning of knowing the path, he should practice the meaning of knowing exhaustion, he should practice the meaning of knowing non-arising, he should practice the meaning of knowing Dharma, he should practice the meaning of following, he should practice the meaning of convention, he should practice the meaning of complete conceptualization, He should practice the meaning of knowing sound as it is. Subhuti, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should thus practice the meaning of Prajnaparamita. Question: Bhagavan, if in this profound Prajnaparamita, meaning and non-meaning are not observed, then how should the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practice the meaning of this profound Prajnaparamita? The Bhagavan said: Subhuti, when the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the profound meaning of Prajnaparamita, he should practice thus: he should not practice whether desire is my meaning or non-meaning. He should not practice whether hatred is my meaning or non-meaning. He should not practice whether delusion is my meaning or non-meaning. He should not practice whether desire, hatred, and delusion are my meaning or non-meaning. He should not practice whether wrong view is my meaning or non-meaning. He should not practice whether all views are my meaning or non-meaning. Why is that? Because the Suchness of desire, hatred, and delusion does not make meaning for anything, nor does it make non-meaning. The Suchness of the aspects of views does not make meaning for anything, nor does it make non-meaning. One should not practice saying that form is my meaning. One should not practice saying that form is not my meaning. Feeling, perception, and formation
