One should not think, "The perfection of generosity follows after them." One should not think, "The perfection of ethics, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, and the perfection of meditation follow after me." One should not think so. The perfection of generosity also should not think, "I am following after the perfection of wisdom." One should not think, "The perfection of ethics, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, and the perfection of meditation, I am following after the perfection of wisdom." Why is that? Because their nature is like this: they cannot do anything, their nature is emptiness, and they are deceptive, like a mirage. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, if all dharmas are empty by nature, then how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practice the perfection of generosity, practice the perfection of ethics, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, and the perfection of wisdom, and attain the unexcelled, perfect, complete enlightenment?" The Blessed One said, "Subhuti, here, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the six perfections, he should think like this: Alas, these beings who dwell in the world are of perverted minds. They are not skilled in means, so they cannot be completely liberated from samsara. However, I should practice the perfection of generosity for the sake of those beings. I should practice the perfection of ethics. I should practice the perfection of patience. I should practice the perfection of diligence. I should practice the perfection of meditation. I should practice the perfection of wisdom." Thinking thus, for the benefit of those beings, external and internal objects

He completely gives, and when he completely gives, he thinks: I have not given anything at all. Why is that? Like this, these things are self-destructive. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who fully understands in this way, perfects the perfection of giving. For the sake of those sentient beings themselves, he does not discriminate against bad morality. Why is that? Like this, he thinks: I have rightly entered into the unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and killing, taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, speaking false words, becoming a divisive speaker, speaking harsh words, becoming a frivolous speaker, having a greedy mind, having a harmful mind, becoming a heretic, craving sensual pleasures, craving gods, Brahma, the land of the Hearers, and the land of the Solitary Buddhas, these are not in accordance with my conduct. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who fully understands in this way, practices in the perfection of morality. For the sake of those sentient beings themselves, even if he is always scolded and threatened with harsh and rude words, he does not generate a mind of anger. Even if he is hit and beaten with stones, sticks, and weapons, and his limbs are broken or cut off, he does not generate a mind of hatred. Why is that? Like this, he fully understands that all sounds are like echoes. He fully understands that all forms are like bubbles. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who fully understands in this way, practices in the perfection of patience. For the sake of those sentient beings themselves, he does not generate a mind of laziness in order to fully seek all roots of virtue. Why is that? Like this, he thinks: Even being born in the heavens is difficult for the lazy to obtain, let alone the unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment? Therefore, I should strive until I attain the unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment and become a Buddha.

Oh! One should think that one should always not abandon diligence for those (beings). Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who thus fully understands practices the perfection of diligence. He does not let his mind be disturbed for the sake of those beings. Why is that? Like this, he thinks: Even to be born in worldly meditation is difficult to achieve with a disturbed mind, what need is there to mention the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment? Therefore, I should not let my mind be disturbed until I manifest the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment and become a Buddha. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who thus fully understands practices the perfection of meditation. For the sake of those beings, he will never be separated from the perfection of wisdom until he manifests the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment and becomes a Buddha. Why is that? Like this, he thinks: Without entering the perfection of wisdom, one cannot fully mature sentient beings by other means. Therefore, I should not generate even a little mind that is combined with unstable wisdom. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who thus fully understands practices the perfection of wisdom for the sake of sentient beings. Question: Bhagavan, if there is no difference between the perfections, then why is this perfection of wisdom called the best of the five perfections? Why is it called the chief? Why is it called the supreme? Why is it called the sacred? Why is it called the excellent? Why is it called the abundant? Why is it called the unsurpassed? Why is it called the incomparable? Why is it called the unequaled? Why is it called equal to the unequal? The Bhagavan said: Subhuti, it is so, it is so. Subhuti, there is no difference in any way between the perfections. If there were no perfection of wisdom, then these five perfections would not even obtain the name of perfection. Because of the perfection of wisdom,
