Chapter Forty-Nine Chapter Forty-Nine The Twenty-Five Thousand Prajñāpāramitā, Volume Fifty-Six. Then, the venerable Śāradvatīputra said to the venerable Subhūti: "Good, venerable Subhūti! The Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva who practices the Prajñāpāramitā is practicing with essence." Having said this, the venerable Subhūti said to the venerable Śāradvatīputra: "Good, venerable Śāradvatīputra! The Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva who practices the Prajñāpāramitā is practicing without essence." Why is that? Venerable Śāradvatīputra, the Prajñāpāramitā is without essence. The Dhyāna-pāramitā, the Vīrya-pāramitā, the Kṣānti-pāramitā, the Śīla-pāramitā, and the Dāna-pāramitā are without essence. Inner emptiness is without essence. The emptiness of the self-nature of non-things up to the emptiness of the self-nature of non-self are without essence. The mindfulnesses are without essence. The right abandonments, the feet of miracles, the faculties, the powers, the branches of enlightenment, and the eightfold noble path are without essence. The eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddhas up to the all-knowingness are without essence. Why is that? Therefore, the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva who practices the Prajñāpāramitā does not perceive even the absence of essence, nor does he truly see it. How much less would he perceive the presence of essence? Then, many sons of the gods who dwell in the desire realm and the form realm thought: "Any son or daughter of good family who generates the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and who practices this profound Prajñāpāramitā as it is taught, and who practices this meaning, and who manifests what kind of true limit, namely the Śrāvaka-bhūmi or the Pratyekabuddha-

Those who do not manifest the true limit of abiding in the ground of Śrāvakas or Pratyekabuddhas are the objects of reverence. Similarly, those Bodhisattva-mahāsattvas who do not manifest this equality of Dharma are worthy of reverence. Then, the venerable Subhūti said to those gods: "Gods, it is not difficult for those Bodhisattva-mahāsattvas to manifest what equality of Dharma, so that they do not manifest that they will abide in the ground of Śrāvakas or Pratyekabuddhas. Gods, it is difficult for them to take up the armor, saying that all immeasurable, countless, and inconceivable beings will be completely liberated from suffering, and those beings who are to be completely liberated from suffering are extremely imperceptible. Therefore, the Bodhisattva-mahāsattva who practices in this way has entered into the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment in order to tame all beings. Thinking of taming beings is like thinking of taming space. Why is that? Because space is solitary, beings are seen as solitary. Because space is emptiness, beings are seen as emptiness. Because space has no essence, beings are seen as having no essence. Because space is accumulation, beings are seen as accumulation. Gods, therefore, those Bodhisattva-mahāsattvas who wear armor for the sake of no beings are practicing austerity. Those who wear armor for the sake of beings want to argue with space. The Bodhisattva-mahāsattva wears that armor, but for which being does the Bodhisattva-mahāsattva wear the armor, those beings are also imperceptible. Why is that? Because beings are solitary, armor is seen as solitary. If it is taught in this way, and the Bodhisattva-mahāsattva does not shrink back, then the Bodhisattva-mahāsattva is practicing the Perfection of Wisdom. Why is that? Because form is solitary, beings are solitary. Feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness are solitary, so beings are
