Chapter Forty-eight. Chapter Forty-eight. Then, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, thought to himself: "For this Bodhisattva Mahasattva, the perfection of generosity, the perfection of ethics, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, the perfection of wisdom, inner emptiness, the emptiness of the nature of non-things, and so on, the four mindfulnesses, the four right abandonments, the four legs of magical power, the faculties, the powers, the limbs of enlightenment, the eightfold noble path, the noble truths, the meditations, the immeasurables, the formless absorptions, the liberations, the gradual abidings in absorption, emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, the superknowledges, the samadhis, the doors of dharani, the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, great love, great compassion, and the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, are still being practiced. If he can still overcome all sentient beings, what need is there to mention that he will awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment? What sentient being's mind enters into all-knowingness, those beings also obtain well, and their lives are lived well, what need is there to mention those who generate the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment? What sentient being generates the mind for perfect and complete enlightenment, and listens to this Prajnaparamita, those beings should all be loved." Having thought thus, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, took many Mandarava flowers and went to where the Blessed One was, and with those Mandarava flowers, he scattered them upon the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly and Completely Awakened One. He scattered them. He scattered them thoroughly. Having scattered them in this way, having scattered them and scattered them thoroughly, the words

What is this called? By this root of virtue, may the Buddha-dharmas be perfected for those individuals, followers of the Bodhisattva Vehicle, who aim for the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. May all the dharmas of the all-knowing ones be perfected. May the self-arisen dharmas be perfected. May the undefiled dharmas be perfected. Bhagavan, I am an individual, a follower of the Bodhisattva Vehicle, who has properly entered into the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and not even a little thought arises that I might turn back. Bhagavan, I am a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, and not even a little thought arises that I might turn back and become a Shravaka or a Pratyekabuddha. I generate faith in the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and again and again I make aspirations for the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Having seen these many sufferings of samsara, I am motivated for the sake of the world, including gods, humans, and asuras. I am motivated to be a physician, motivated to be happiness, motivated to do good. A Bodhisattva Mahasattva endowed with such a motivation thinks like this: "Having crossed over, how will I liberate sentient beings who have not crossed over? Having been liberated, how will I liberate sentient beings who have not been liberated? Having exhaled, how will I cause sentient beings who have not exhaled to exhale? Having completely passed into nirvana, how will I cause sentient beings who have not completely passed into nirvana to completely pass into nirvana?" Thus he thinks. Bhagavan, in this way, I rejoice in the motivation of those Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who have newly entered this vehicle. I rejoice in the motivation of those Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who have been practicing for a long time. I rejoice in the motivation of those irreversible Bodhisattva Mahasattvas. I rejoice in the motivation of those Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who are bound by one lifetime.

If so, how much merit will that son or daughter of good family increase? After this request, the Blessed One said to Indra, the lord of the gods: Kausika, the world of the four great continents, even if it could be measured by the size of a hair tip, the merit of those who rejoice and have the mind of enlightenment is immeasurable. Kausika, the thousand worlds, the two thousand worlds, and the three thousand great thousand worlds, even if they could be measured by the size of a hair tip, the merit of those who rejoice and have the mind of enlightenment is immeasurable. Kausika, the great oceans of the three thousand great thousand worlds, however many aggregates of water there are, even if they could be measured by taking one part of a hair divided into a hundred parts and taking a drop of water, the merit of those who rejoice and have the mind of enlightenment is immeasurable. After this was said, Indra, the lord of the gods, said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, those beings who do not rejoice in those who have generated the mind of enlightenment are blessed by Mara. Blessed One, those beings who do not rejoice in those who have generated the mind of enlightenment have become part of Mara's retinue. Blessed One, those beings who do not rejoice in those who have generated the mind of enlightenment have died and transmigrated from Mara's realm. Why is that? Blessed One, because those beings who accomplish this mind of enlightenment and completely dedicate it to the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment will destroy Mara's realm. Whatever mind of enlightenment is generated for the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment should be rejoiced in. Whoever has not abandoned the Buddha, has not abandoned the Dharma, and has not abandoned the Sangha, I rejoice in their mind of enlightenment. Having rejoiced, unsurpassed, perfect,
