Chapter Forty-Five Chapter Forty-Five Then, the Blessed One spoke to the Venerable Subhuti, saying: Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, even in a dream, does not generate a desire for the Hearer's ground, or the Solitary Buddha's ground, or the three realms (of Samsara), does not generate a pleasing thought, and views all dharmas as being like a dream, like an echo, like an image, like a mirage, like an illusion, and does not manifest them, Subhuti, this should be known as the characteristic of a non-regressing Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Furthermore, Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, even in a dream, sees the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, with hundreds of thousands of attendants, thousands of thousands of attendants, hundreds of thousands of attendants, tens of millions of attendants, hundreds of millions of attendants, thousands of millions of attendants, hundreds of thousands of millions of attendants, and hundreds of thousands of billions of attendants, surrounded and preceded by many monks, nuns, laymen, laywomen, gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, and hears the Dharma being taught, and after hearing it, thinks, 'I should understand the meaning of this Dharma,' and enters and abides in the Dharma and the practice of Dharma, and accordingly enters and practices the practice of Dharma, Subhuti, this should also be known as the characteristic of a non-regressing Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Furthermore, Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, even in a dream, sees the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, rising into the sky, teaching the Dharma to the Sangha of monks, possessing the thirty-two marks of a great being, having a light of one fathom, showing many miracles and wonders, creating many emanations, and also sees those emanations performing the deeds of the Buddha in other world realms,

Subhuti, this should also be known as the characteristic of non-retrogression for a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who is non-retrogressing. Furthermore, Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, even in a dream, sees a village being destroyed, a city being destroyed, a fire, a fierce flesh-eating Rakshasa, or sees the form of other fierce flesh-eaters, or sees a head being cut off, or sees other frightening, unpleasant, and startling things, or sees suffering, discomfort, and strife, or sees hunger and thirst, or sees a father die, or a mother die, or a brother die, or a sister die, or a friend or relative die, and does not feel sorrow, fear, and displeasure, nor is startled, and after waking up from that dream, thinks like this: 'Alas! All these three realms are like a dream. I shall also attain the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment, and then show all the dharmas of the three realms as being like a dream.' Subhuti, this should also be known as the characteristic of non-retrogression for a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who is non-retrogressing. Furthermore, Subhuti, how is it known that after a non-retrogressing Bodhisattva-Mahasattva attains the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment, in that Buddha-field of his, the three evil destinies do not exist in all places, in all aspects, in all circumstances? If a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva sees in a dream a sentient being of the hell realm, or sees a sentient being of the animal realm, or sees a sentient being of the Yama world, and obtains such mindfulness, and after obtaining mindfulness, thinks like this: 'After I attain the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment, in that Buddha-field, the three evil destinies do not exist in all places, in all aspects, in all circumstances, I shall act in that way.' Why is that? Because whatever a dream is, and whatever the limit of a dream is, those two are non-dual, they are inseparable.' Subhuti, this should also be known as the characteristic of non-retrogression for a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva.

It should be known as the characteristic of irreversibility. Furthermore, Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, in a dream or while awake, sees a city being burned, they should think: "In my dream or while awake, whatever aspects, manners, and signs I see, those aspects, manners, and signs possessed by a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who is to be known as irreversible, if I possess those aspects, those manners, and those signs, then by those truths and words of truth, may this fire of the city be pacified, be cooled, be extinguished." If it is pacified, cooled, and extinguished, Subhuti, it should be known that that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva has been predicted by the Tathagatas to be irreversible from unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Subhuti, if the mass of fire, by that word of truth, burns from house to house, from street to street, some houses being burned and some not, some streets being burned and some not, Subhuti, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should know that: "Some houses of these sentient beings are burned and some are not, because these sentient beings have committed the karma of abandoning the Dharma, therefore their karma ripens in this life, and because they slander the Dharma, the remaining karma of their actions will also ripen." Subhuti, this is the cause and condition of an irreversible Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, and by those causes and those conditions, they should be known as an irreversible Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Furthermore, Subhuti, what aspects, what manners, and what signs by which a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should be known as irreversible, those aspects, those manners, and those signs will be explained. Subhuti, if a certain woman or man is blessed by a non-human being, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should think: "If I have been predicted by the Buddhas, Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly and completely enlightened ones of the past to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and my mind is completely pure, and I
