Chapter Forty-one. Chapter Forty-one. Having spoken thus, the venerable Subhuti addressed the Blessed One as follows: "Blessed One, the irreversible Bodhisattva-Mahasattva possesses great qualities. Blessed One, the irreversible Bodhisattva-Mahasattva possesses immeasurable, countless, and inconceivable qualities. Blessed One, the irreversible Bodhisattva-Mahasattva possesses immovable qualities." The Blessed One declared: "Subhuti, it is so, it is so. Subhuti, the irreversible Bodhisattva-Mahasattva possesses great qualities. Subhuti, the irreversible Bodhisattva-Mahasattva possesses immeasurable, countless, and inconceivable qualities. Subhuti, the irreversible Bodhisattva-Mahasattva possesses immovable qualities. Why is that? Because he is like this, he has obtained the boundless and limitless wisdom that is not shared by all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, and abiding in that wisdom, the irreversible Bodhisattva-Mahasattva has attained the distinct perfect knowledge, so that no matter how the world with gods, humans, and asuras asks, the answers of his distinct perfect knowledge will never be exhausted." Subhuti inquired: "Blessed One, in how many kalpas like the sands of the Ganges River, does the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, have the power to show the aspects, ways, and characteristics of the irreversible Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, by which aspects, ways, and characteristics is the irreversible Bodhisattva-Mahasattva spoken of? Blessed One, where does the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abide, and when practicing the six perfections, how does he perfect the four mindfulnesses, as well as the right abandonments, the legs of magical power, the faculties, the powers, the branches of enlightenment, and the eightfold noble path?

To accomplish perfectly, the noble truths, meditative concentration, immeasurables, and the formless attainments, to accomplish perfectly liberation, and the successive abidings of meditative concentration, emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, to accomplish perfectly, clairvoyance, samadhi, and the gates of dharani, to accomplish perfectly, the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, great love, great compassion, and the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, to accomplish perfectly, up to the omniscience, please explain well these profound profound places. The Blessed One said: "Well done, well done, Subhuti! Subhuti, it is good that you intend to ask the Tathagata about these profound places for the benefit of the irreversible Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas. Subhuti, the term 'profound' is a synonym for emptiness. This is a synonym for signlessness, wishlessness, non-fabrication, non-arising, detachment from desire, cessation, nirvana, peace, suchness, the limit of reality, and the realm of dharma. Subhuti, for example, whatever are the synonyms for nirvana, those are what are called the profound profound places." Asked: "Is that a synonym for nirvana? Isn't it a synonym for all dharmas?" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, the term 'profound' is also a synonym for all dharmas. Why is that? Subhuti, form is profound. Feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness are profound. Subhuti, the eye is profound. Ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind are profound. Subhuti, form is profound. Sound, smell, taste, touch, and dharmas are profound. Subhuti, eye consciousness is profound. Eye contact, and the feeling born from eye contact, are profound. Subhuti, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind consciousness are profound.

Subhuti, even up to all-knowingness is profound. Enlightenment is profound, Subhuti, how is form profound? How are feeling and perception and formation and consciousness profound? How are the six sense sources and elements and dependent origination profound? How are all perfections and all emptiness and the factors of enlightenment profound? How even up to the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha are profound? How even up to all-knowingness is profound? How is enlightenment profound?
