Chapter Forty Chapter Forty Furthermore, Subhuti, the Evil One, Mara, approaches the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, intending to distract them, and says: "This All-Knowingness (Sarvākārajñatā) is like space, without substantial nature, empty by its own characteristics. These dharmas are also like space, without substantial nature, empty by their own characteristics. Thus, all dharmas are like space, without substantial nature, empty by their own characteristics. Among them, who can realize Bodhi? By what can they realize Bodhi? And in what dharma should they realize Bodhi? None of these can be found. All these dharmas are like space, without substantial nature, empty by their own characteristics. Therefore, the thought, 'I should realize the Unsurpassed Perfect and Complete Enlightenment,' will only increase your afflictions. This is the teaching of Mara, not what the Perfectly and Completely Enlightened Buddha taught. Son of good family, abandon these thoughts! Do not engage in useless activities for a long time, increasing suffering and ultimately falling into wrong paths." Upon hearing these words, the son or daughter of good family should contemplate as follows: "Such distraction from my attainment of Unsurpassed Perfect and Complete Enlightenment is the work of Mara. Although all dharmas are like space, without substantial nature, empty by their own characteristics, sentient beings do not understand, do not see, do not comprehend. Therefore, I should don the armor that is like space, without substantial nature, empty by its own characteristics, realize All-Knowingness (Sarvākārajñatā), and proclaim the dharma to be realized to all sentient beings, causing them to rejoice in the fruit of Stream-Enterer, to rejoice in the fruit of Once-Returner, Non-Returner, Arhatship, and Solitary Buddha enlightenment, and to rejoice in Unsurpassed Perfect and Complete Enlightenment." Thus, they should think in their hearts.

Generating the mind of enlightenment. Regarding this, from the moment a Bodhisattva Mahasattva first generates the mind, they should closely associate with virtuous friends. Having heard these teachings, they should make their mind firm, unmoving, and unshakeable. Possessing the qualities of a firm, unmoving, and unshakeable mind, if they practice the six perfections, they will enter the Bodhisattva path without fault. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Bhagavan: "Bhagavan, can a non-retrogressing Bodhisattva Mahasattva be called retrogressing? Or can a retrogressing Bodhisattva be called non-retrogressing?" The Bhagavan replied: "Subhuti, a non-retrogressing Bodhisattva can also be called retrogressing. A retrogressing Bodhisattva can also be called non-retrogressing." Subhuti asked: "Bhagavan, why can a non-retrogressing Bodhisattva be called retrogressing? Why can a retrogressing Bodhisattva be called non-retrogressing?" The Bhagavan replied: "Subhuti, If a Bodhisattva retrogresses from the level of a Hearer or the level of a Solitary Buddha, then, Subhuti, that is a retrogressing Bodhisattva, and can also be called a non-retrogressing Bodhisattva. Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva does not retrogress from the level of a Hearer or the level of a Solitary Buddha, then, Subhuti, that is a non-retrogressing Bodhisattva, and can also be called a retrogressing Bodhisattva. Subhuti, through these aspects, these ways, and these characteristics, one should recognize the characteristics of a non-retrogressing Bodhisattva Mahasattva. A Bodhisattva Mahasattva who possesses these aspects, these ways, and these characteristics cannot be turned back from unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment by the evil Mara. Subhuti, furthermore, a non-retrogressing Bodhisattva Mahasattva, if they wish, can enter the first dhyana, can enter the second, third, and fourth dhyanas, and can enter cessation. Subhuti, furthermore, a non-retrogressing Bodhisattva

If one wishes to be a great Bodhisattva, one should abide in the four mindfulnesses. One should abide in the four right abandonments, the miraculous feet, the faculties, the powers, the limbs of enlightenment, and the eightfold noble path. One should abide in emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness samadhi, and manifest the five superknowledges. One becomes familiar with the cessation attainment through those four dhyanas, four immeasurables, and four formless attainments. One cultivates the mindfulnesses, the right abandonments, the miraculous feet, the faculties, the powers, the limbs of enlightenment, and the eightfold noble path. One also abides in emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness samadhi, but does not grasp the fruit of dhyana. One does not grasp the fruit of the immeasurables and formless attainments, nor does one grasp the fruit of cessation attainment. One does not grasp the fruit of stream-entry, nor does one grasp the fruit of once-returner, non-returner, and arhatship. One does not achieve solitary enlightenment. If one wishes to do so, one should especially contemplate and fully hold onto the body, holding onto such a body that will accomplish the benefit of sentient beings. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who possesses those aspects, those ways, and those characteristics should be recognized as irreversible. Subhuti, furthermore, an irreversible Bodhisattva-Mahasattva possesses the thought of enlightenment, does not separate from the mind of enlightenment, and does not grasp at form, does not grasp at signs, does not grasp at the body, does not grasp at generosity, does not grasp at ethics, does not grasp at patience, does not grasp at diligence, does not grasp at meditation, does not grasp at wisdom, does not grasp at inner emptiness, does not grasp at the emptiness of the nature of non-things, and does not grasp at the dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment.
