Chapter Thirty-Nine. Chapter Thirty-Nine. Having spoken thus, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, what are the characteristics of a non-regressing Bodhisattva Mahasattva? What is the manner? How should we know that this Bodhisattva Mahasattva is non-regressing?" Having spoken thus, the Blessed One said to the venerable Subhuti: "Subhuti, here, all those explanations about the grounds of ordinary beings, the grounds of Hearers, the grounds of Solitary Buddhas, the grounds of Bodhisattvas, and the grounds of Tathagatas, all of them, in suchness, are without change, without discrimination, non-dual, and cannot be made into two. That is suchness, entering as it is. In suchness, there is no discrimination, and entering without discrimination in that way, having heard suchness as it is, having transcended it, there is no doubt about those suchnesses, whether they are single, both, or neither. That is not speaking randomly, but speaking in accordance with meaning. It is not speaking without meaning. Not looking at what others have done or not done, but seeking good speech. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who possesses those characteristics, those manners, and those signs should be known as non-regressing." Subhuti asked: "Blessed One, with what characteristics, what manners, and what signs should a Bodhisattva Mahasattva be known as non-regressing?" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, all dharmas are without characteristics, without manners, and without signs." Subhuti asked: "Blessed One, if all dharmas are without characteristics, without manners, and without signs, then from which dharmas is it said that a Bodhisattva Mahasattva is non-regressing, in order to regress from them?" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva regresses from form, regresses from feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness, regresses from the sense bases and elements,

That which turns back from dependent origination, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should be known as irreversible. A Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who turns back from the perfection of generosity, from the perfection of morality, from the perfection of patience, from the perfection of diligence, from the perfection of meditation, and from the perfection of wisdom; who turns back from inner emptiness, from the interval of the emptiness of the nature of non-things; who turns back from the mindfulnesses; who turns back from the right abandonments, the miraculous feet, the faculties, the powers, the limbs of enlightenment, and the eightfold noble path; who turns back from the noble truths, the meditations, the immeasurables, and the formless absorptions; who turns back from liberation, the successive abidings, emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, clairvoyance, samadhi, and the doors of dharani; who turns back from the ten powers of the Tathagata, fearlessness, individual perfect knowledge, great love, great compassion, and the eight unmixed qualities of the Buddha; who turns back from the grounds of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas; who turns back from the knowledge of the aspects of the path; who turns back from unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should be known as irreversible. Why is that? Subhuti, it is like this: in whatever place a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abides, there is no nature of form. In whatever place a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abides, there is no nature of feeling, perception, formation, or consciousness. In whatever place a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abides, there is no nature of the sense bases, the elements, or dependent origination. In whatever place a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abides, there is no nature of all the perfections, all the emptinesses, or the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment.
