Chapter Eighteen Chapter Eighteen Then, the Blessed One spoke to Indra, the lord of the gods, saying: Kaushika, whether a son or daughter of good family, if someone holds, recites, reads, masters, chants, and properly contemplates this profound Prajñāpāramitā, when they are in the midst of battle, preparing to go to war. If that son or daughter of good family goes forth reciting this profound Prajñāpāramitā, that son or daughter of good family cannot be defeated; they will surely be victorious. Having won, they will emerge from that battle unharmed. Kaushika, whether a son or daughter of good family, it is impossible that someone who chants this profound Prajñāpāramitā and goes to war will die as a result; there is no such possibility. If someone shoots an arrow at their body, or strikes them with a weapon, the arrow or weapon will not hit or penetrate their body. Why is this? Because that son or daughter of good family has long practiced the six perfections, relied upon and meditated upon this very Prajñāpāramitā. They have destroyed their own arrow of desire and weapon of desire, and they have also destroyed the arrow of desire and weapon of desire of others; they have destroyed their own arrow of hatred and weapon of hatred, and they have also destroyed the arrow of hatred and weapon of hatred of others; they have destroyed their own arrow of delusion and weapon of delusion, and they have also destroyed the arrow of delusion and weapon of delusion of others; they have destroyed their own arrow of views and weapon of views, and they have also destroyed the arrow of views and weapon of views of others; they have destroyed their own arrow of arising and weapon of arising, and they have also destroyed the arrow of arising and weapon of arising of others; they have destroyed their own arrow of latent tendencies and weapon of latent tendencies, and they have also destroyed the arrow of latent tendencies and weapon of latent tendencies of others. Kaushika, therefore, when a son or daughter of good family goes to battle, weapons

Arrows will not strike and cause pain. Kaushika, furthermore, if a son or daughter of good family holds, recites, understands, and properly attends to this profound Perfection of Wisdom, and does not separate from the mind of all-knowingness, then if someone harms them with poison, curses them, burns them in a pit of fire, strikes them with weapons, poisons them, or throws them into water, all of these will not harm them. Why is that? Kaushika, because this Perfection of Wisdom is the great mantra. Kaushika, this Perfection of Wisdom is the unsurpassed mantra. Kaushika, this Perfection of Wisdom is the unequaled mantra, and a son or daughter of good family who studies this mantra will not harm themselves, nor will they harm others, nor will they harm both. Why is that? Because when they study this, they do not fixate on self, nor do they fixate on the seer. They do not fixate on form, nor do they fixate on feeling, perception, formation, or consciousness. They do not fixate on the sense bases, elements, dependent origination, the perfections, all emptiness, the aspects of enlightenment, the noble truths, meditative concentration, the immeasurables, the formless absorptions, the eight liberations, the nine successive abidings, the doors of liberation of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, the superknowledges, samadhi, the doors of dharani, the ten powers, fearlessness, the separate correct knowledges, the unmixed qualities of the Buddha, and even all-knowingness. Because they do not fixate in this way, they will not harm themselves, nor will they harm others, nor will they harm both, and they will attain unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment, and will be able to truly see the minds of all sentient beings. Why is that? Because the Tathagatas, Arhats of the past, future, and present

Even the perfectly complete Buddhas have trained in this very mantra, and have manifestly awakened to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Kausika! Furthermore, even if this Perfection of Wisdom is not grasped, recited, read, or fully understood, and is not properly kept in mind, in whatever house, village, town, or city it is written and held, humans or non-humans will not be able to find an opportunity to make trouble. Why is that? It is because this Perfection of Wisdom is being honored. The sons of the gods of the four great kings' retinue in the three-thousand great-thousand world realm, and the thirty-three, the Yama, the Tushita, the Enjoying Emanations, the Controlling Others' Emanations, the Brahma retinue, the Brahma Attendants, the Great Brahma, and the sons of the gods between the No Heat, and the sons of the gods of the four great kings' retinue in immeasurable, countless world realms, and the thirty-three, the Yama, the Tushita, the Enjoying Emanations, the Controlling Others' Emanations, the Brahma retinue, the Brahma Attendants, the Great Brahma, and all the sons of the gods between the No Heat, whichever sons of good family or daughters of good family write and hold this profound Perfection of Wisdom, they will always, without interruption, protect, rescue, and guard them. Those sons of the gods will also come and pay homage, respect, revere, and make offerings to this Perfection of Wisdom, and then depart. Kausika! Therefore, wherever this Perfection of Wisdom is written and held, one will have these qualities and benefits in this life. Kausika! For example, the Bodhi tree, or the surroundings of the Bodhi tree, or within the Bodhi tree, wherever there are beings belonging to the animal realm, or beings who have become human, humans or non-humans will not be able to harm or injure them. Why is that? Because the Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly complete Buddhas of the past have also dwelt there and attained the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment.
