Chapter Nineteen: Beings with and without Objects. Chapter Nineteen: Beings with and without Objects. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, if those dharmas are the dharmas of a Bodhisattva, then what are the dharmas of a Buddha?" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, what you say, 'if those dharmas are the dharmas of a Bodhisattva, then what are the dharmas of a Buddha?' Subhuti, the dharmas of a Buddha are merely the complete and perfect enlightenment of those very dharmas in all aspects. Having attained that omniscience, all connections of habit are completely abandoned. Thus, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva realizes complete and perfect enlightenment. The Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha realizes complete and perfect Buddhahood with the wisdom that possesses all dharmas in a single instant, and thus enters the category of Tathagata. There is that difference between a Bodhisattva Mahasattva and a Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha. Subhuti, for example, one who has entered the stream is different, and one who abides in the fruit is different, but it should not be said that both of them are not noble beings. Subhuti, similarly, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva is one who has entered the path of no obstruction. The Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha is one who has attained the wisdom that is unobstructed to all dharmas. Subhuti, that is the difference between a Bodhisattva Mahasattva and a Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha." Subhuti said: "Blessed One, if all dharmas are empty of their own nature, then for those dharmas that are empty of their own nature, this is a sentient being of hell, this is a place of animal birth, this is the world of Yama, this is a god, this is a human, this is a lineage ground, this is the eighth, this is a stream-enterer, this is a once-returner, this is a non-returner, this is an Arhat, this is a Pratyekabuddha.

Done. This is a Bodhisattva. How does one differentiate and distinguish between this being a Tathagata, an Arhat, a perfectly enlightened Buddha? Blessed One, just as that person has no inherent existence, so too does karma have no inherent existence. Just as karma has no inherent existence, so too does the ripening of karma have no inherent existence. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, it is so, it is so. Just as you have said, it is so. In all dharmas, which are empty of their own nature, karma and the ripening of karma have no inherent existence. Subhuti, those who do not understand all dharmas, which are empty of their own nature, in this way, will engage in evil conduct, good conduct, or unwavering karma. Through the karma of evil conduct, they will fall into the three lower realms. Through the karma of good conduct, they will be born as gods and humans. Through unwavering karma, they will be born in the form realm or the formless realm. Therefore, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should practice the perfection of generosity, should practice the perfection of ethics, should practice the perfection of patience, should practice the perfection of diligence, should practice the perfection of meditation, should practice the perfection of wisdom. They should practice inner emptiness, they should practice outer emptiness, they should practice inner and outer emptiness, they should practice emptiness of emptiness, they should practice great emptiness, they should practice ultimate emptiness, they should practice conditioned emptiness, they should practice unconditioned emptiness, they should practice emptiness beyond extremes, they should practice emptiness without beginning or end. They should practice emptiness without abandonment, they should practice emptiness of inherent nature, they should practice emptiness of all dharmas, they should practice emptiness of self-nature, they should practice emptiness of non-perception, they should practice emptiness of non-entity, they should practice emptiness of essence, they should practice emptiness of non-entity essence. They should practice the mindfulnesses, they should practice the right abandonments, they should practice the miraculous feet, they should practice the faculties, they should practice the powers, they should practice the limbs of enlightenment.
