or understand the truth of non-existence? If they understand, then those can also be established as the fruit of stream-enterer, or the fruit of once-returner, or the fruit of non-returner, or Arhatship, or Pratyekabuddhahood, or unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment. Subhuti, for ordinary beings, there is neither a path, nor the establishment of a path, nor the cultivation of a path. How can there be the establishment of a fruit for ordinary beings? Subhuti, for noble beings, there is a path, and there is the cultivation of a path. Therefore, for those noble beings, there is the establishment of a fruit. Question: Blessed One, why is it? Is fruit attained by cultivating the path? Is there a fruit to be attained? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, it is not so. Fruit is not attained by cultivating the path, nor is there a fruit to be attained. Subhuti, without cultivating the path, fruit is not attained, nor does the path attain fruit. Without abiding in the path, fruit will not be attained. Subhuti, thus, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, with skillful means, they establish the fruit of sentient beings, but they do not discriminate between the conditioned realm or the unconditioned realm and establish fruit. Question: Blessed One, if it is so, without discriminating between the conditioned realm or the unconditioned realm and without the establishment of fruit, how does the Blessed One say that this is the fruit of stream-enterer because of abandoning the three bonds? Because of thinning desire and hatred, it is the fruit of once-returner. Because of abandoning the five lower fetters, it is the fruit of non-returner. Because of abandoning the five higher fetters, it is Arhatship. Whatever it may be, because of knowing that all arising phenomena are of the nature of cessation, it is Pratyekabuddhahood. Because of abandoning all habitual connection of afflictions, it is perfect complete enlightenment? Blessed One, discriminating between conditioned or unconditioned dharmas

The Blessed One said: Subhuti, is the fruit of stream-enterer, or the fruit of once-returner, or the fruit of non-returner, or the Arhat himself, or the Pratyekabuddha, or the unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment, conditioned or unconditioned? He replied: Blessed One, that is unconditioned. Sugata, that is unconditioned. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, then is there any distinction in the unconditioned dharma? He replied: Blessed One, there is not. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? When a son or daughter of good family, with regard to conditioned and unconditioned dharmas, such as, when the signless is merged into one sign, at that time, is there any distinction made in any dharma, whether conditioned or unconditioned? He replied: Blessed One, there is not. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, likewise, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, such as, abiding in the emptiness of internal, the emptiness of external, the emptiness of internal and external, the emptiness of emptiness, the great emptiness, the ultimate emptiness, the emptiness of the conditioned, the emptiness of the unconditioned, the emptiness beyond extremes, the emptiness of beginningless and endless, the emptiness of non-abandonment, the emptiness of self-nature, the emptiness of all dharmas, the emptiness of self-characteristic, the emptiness of non-apprehension, the emptiness of non-entity, the emptiness of essence, the emptiness of the essence of non-entity, he does not teach the Dharma to sentient beings by making distinctions.
