Twenty-first, The Chapter on Absence of Characteristics. Twenty-first, The Chapter on Absence of Characteristics. The Hundred Thousand Verses of the Perfection of Wisdom, Volume Nineteen. Then, the venerable Subhuti again said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, if all dharmas are of the nature of non-substantiality, seeing what purpose do Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas enter into unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment for the sake of sentient beings?" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, just as all dharmas are of the nature of non-substantiality, so do Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas enter into unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment. Why is that? Subhuti, signs are narrow, and those who cling to signs cannot attain, cannot realize, and cannot achieve unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment." He asked: "Blessed One, is there attainment, realization, or unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment in the absence of signs?" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, because the realm of dharma is without disturbance, non-sign is itself attainment, non-sign is itself realization, non-sign is itself unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment. Whoever desires to attain, realize, or achieve unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment in non-sign, that one merely desires to disturb the realm of dharma." He asked: "Blessed One, if that is so, there is no attainment, no realization, and no unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment in the absence of signs, and non-sign is itself attainment, non-sign is itself realization, non-sign is itself unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, then, Blessed One, where is the first ground of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva? Where is the second ground? Where is the third ground? Where is the fourth ground? Where is the fifth ground? Where is the sixth ground? Where is the seventh ground? Where is the eighth ground? Where is the ninth ground? Where is the tenth ground? Where is the tolerance of the unoriginated dharma?

How could there be patience arising from maturation? How could there be diligence arising from maturation? How could there be meditation arising from maturation? How could there be wisdom arising from maturation? How could there be the dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment arising from maturation? Abiding in those dharmas arising from maturation, completely ripening sentient beings, completely purifying the Buddha-fields, and serving the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, with food, drink, soft food, bedding, palaces, utensils, flowers, incense, perfumes, garlands, unguents, powders, Dharma robes, umbrellas, victory banners, streamers, lamps, and any other offerings of the abundance of gods and humans, and for them those offerings are not interrupted, until complete nirvana, for relics and the assembly of śrāvakas, even if they have matured, they will not be exhausted, then, Bhagavat, for that reason, would the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva not disturb the limits of Dharma? The Bhagavat said: Subhūti, for what reason? Because of non-apprehension. The Bodhisattva Mahāsattva does not disturb the limits of Dharma.
