Ninth, the Chapter on Increase. Ninth, the Chapter on Increase. Furthermore, Subhuti, even when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva enters the first dhyana, he does not completely cling to the ripening. Why is that? It is because he is endowed with skillful means. That skillful means knows that the first dhyana is empty of its own nature. He knows it as non-existent and unborn. He knows it as incomplete. He knows it as not manifestly established. Even when he enters the second dhyana, he does not completely cling to the ripening. Why is that? It is because he is endowed with skillful means. That skillful means knows that the second dhyana is empty of its own nature. He knows it as non-existent and unborn. He knows it as incomplete. Even if one enters, one does not completely grasp the fully ripened result. What is the reason for this? It is because one possesses skillful means; that skillful means knows that joy is empty of its own nature. It knows it is non-existent and unborn. It knows it is not completely perfected. It knows it is not manifestly established. Even if one enters equanimity, one does not completely grasp the fully ripened result. What is the reason for this? It is because one possesses skillful means; that skillful means knows that equanimity is empty of its own nature. It knows it is non-existent and unborn. It knows it is not completely perfected. It knows it is not manifestly established. Even if one enters the absorption of the sphere of infinite space, one does not completely grasp the fully ripened result. What is the reason for this? It is because one possesses skillful means; that skillful means knows that the sphere of infinite space is empty of its own nature. It knows it is non-existent and unborn. It knows it is not completely perfected. It knows it is not manifestly established. Even if one enters the absorption of the sphere of infinite consciousness, one does not completely grasp the fully ripened result. What is the reason for this? It is because one possesses skillful means; that skillful means knows that the sphere of infinite consciousness is empty of its own nature. It knows it is non-existent and unborn. It knows it is not completely perfected. It knows it is not manifestly established. Even if one enters the absorption of the sphere of nothingness, one does not completely grasp the fully ripened result. What is the reason for this? It is because one possesses skillful means; that skillful means knows that the sphere of nothingness is empty of its own nature. It knows it is non-existent and unborn. It knows it is not completely perfected. It knows it is not manifestly established. Even if one enters the absorption of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, one does not completely grasp the fully ripened result. What is the reason for this? It is because one possesses skillful means; that skillful means knows that the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception is empty of its own nature. It knows it is non-existent and unborn.
