How does one know whether a dharma has substance or not, and how does one fully understand it? World Honored One, one cannot fully understand a dharma without substance by means of a dharma without substance; nor can one fully understand a dharma with substance by means of a dharma with substance. Nor can one fully understand a dharma with substance by means of a dharma without substance. Nor can one understand a dharma without substance by means of a dharma with substance. Thus, since there is no complete understanding of all dharmas, how could a Bodhisattva Mahasattva even think of substance or non-substance? The World Honored One said: When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, by embracing the conventional truth of the world, he shows that there is substance or that there is no substance, but this is not the ultimate truth. Asked: World Honored One, what is it? Is the conventional truth of the world one thing, and the ultimate truth another? The World Honored One said: Subhuti, it is not that the conventional truth of the world is one thing and the ultimate truth is another. However, whatever is the suchness of the conventional truth of the world is also the suchness of the ultimate truth. However, because those sentient beings are inverted, they do not know or see that suchness. For the sake of those beings, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva speaks of substance or non-substance by means of the conventional truth of the world. Subhuti, in this way, some sentient beings have the perception that the five aggregates have substance, and they do not know that they are without substance. For the sake of those beings, he takes up various distinctions of dharmas and says, 'How can one know that there is no substance?' Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should practice the Perfection of Wisdom in this way. End of the Hundred Thousand Verses of the Perfection of Wisdom, Chapter Fifty-Four.
