Or being disturbed by humans or non-humans, or being dismembered, or being taken away, even so, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, abiding in the perfection of diligence, would not think, "What did he take from me? What did he cut from me? What did he take from me?" He would not think like that. On the contrary, he would think, "For what purpose was my body completely prepared? Those fellows came here, dismembered, cut off, and took away, I should obtain it well." Therefore, he also remembers well the nature of all dharmas. Those roots of virtue will also not be dedicated to the ground of the Hearers or the Solitary Buddhas. On the contrary, he will dedicate it together with all sentient beings to the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Subhuti, in this way, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides in the perfection of diligence and completely upholds the perfection of patience. Question: World Honored One, how does the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abide in the perfection of diligence and completely uphold the perfection of meditative concentration? The World Honored One said: Subhuti, here, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva is separated from desire, separated from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, with investigation and analysis, born of separation, possessing joy and happiness, approaching and abiding in the first dhyana. He investigates and analyzes cessation, his mind is completely purified, his mind essence becomes one, without investigation and analysis, born from samadhi, possessing joy and happiness, approaching and abiding in the second dhyana. He is free from attachment from joy, possessing mindfulness, dwelling in equanimity, his body experiences happiness, the noble ones say, "There, possessing mindfulness, discriminatingly practicing happiness, is equanimity." Approaching and abiding in the third dhyana without joy. He also abandons happiness and also abandons suffering.

Since comfort and discomfort have long disappeared, there is neither comfort nor suffering, and he abides in the fourth dhyana, completely purified by equanimity. He generates the thought of happiness for sentient beings, and abides in immeasurable loving-kindness. He generates the thought of being separated from suffering for sentient beings, and abides in immeasurable compassion. He generates the thought of joy for sentient beings, and abides in immeasurable joy. He generates the thought of neither suffering nor happiness for sentient beings, and abides in immeasurable equanimity. He generates the thought of form extensively, and generates the thought of emptiness peacefully, and abides in the sphere of infinite space. He generates the thought of space extensively, and generates the thought of consciousness peacefully, and abides in the sphere of infinite consciousness. He generates the thought of consciousness extensively, and generates the thought of nothingness peacefully, and abides in the sphere of nothingness. He generates the thought of nothingness extensively, and generates the thought of neither perception nor non-perception peacefully, and abides in the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. He does not accept the fully ripened results of dhyana, immeasurables, and formless absorptions, but for the sake of benefiting sentient beings, he is not born there, and he fully matures those sentient beings in the perfection of generosity, the perfection of ethics, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, and the perfection of wisdom, these six perfections. In order to generate roots of virtue, he reverently honors the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, and goes from Buddha-field to Buddha-field. Subhuti, in this way, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva is diligent in the perfection of diligence.
