Chapter Forty: Showing the Signs of the Path of Application Chapter Forty: Showing the Signs of the Path of Application The Hundred Thousand Verses of the Perfection of Wisdom, Volume Ten. Furthermore, Subhuti, an evil demon approaches a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva to turn him away from his aspiration, (saying,) "This all-knowingness is equal to space, it is the nature of non-existence, empty by its own characteristic. This Dharma is also equal to space, it is the nature of non-existence, empty by its own characteristic. Thus, all Dharmas are equal to space, they are the nature of non-existence, empty by their own characteristics. Who attains complete enlightenment? Who attains complete enlightenment by what? What are the Dharmas by which one attains complete enlightenment? Those are all unobtainable. All these Dharmas are equal to space, they are the nature of non-existence, empty by their own characteristics. Thinking thus: 'I shall attain complete enlightenment in unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment,' this is your labor in vain. This is what the demon has spoken. This is not what the perfectly and completely enlightened Buddha has spoken." Son of good family, abandon those thoughts, do not engage in harm and uselessness for a long time, you will fall into suffering and wrong paths. If that son of good family or daughter of good family hears those words, he should thoroughly examine them in this way: "Thus, what turns me away from unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment is the work of the demon. All Dharmas are equal to space, they are the nature of non-existence, empty by their own characteristics. However, those sentient beings have not known, have not seen, have not understood. Therefore, I shall don the armor of emptiness like space, the nature of non-existence, empty by its own characteristics, and manifest complete enlightenment in all-knowingness, and teach the Dharma of arising to all sentient beings. I shall cause sentient beings to rejoice in the fruit of stream-entry, I shall cause them to rejoice in the fruit of once-returner.

Should do. One should greatly rejoice in the fruit of non-returning. One should greatly rejoice in the Arhat himself. One should greatly rejoice in the Pratyekabuddha enlightenment. One should generate the mind thinking, "I should greatly rejoice in the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment." From the time a Bodhisattva Mahasattva first generates the mind, one should closely attend to these. When hearing these teachings, one should make the mind firm. One should not let the mind waver. One should not let the mind be stolen. When he has a firm mind, a non-wavering mind, and a mind that is not stolen, and engages in the six perfections, the Bodhisattva will enter without fault. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One, "For what reason, Blessed One, do you call a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who does not regress, 'non-regressing'? Or do you call a Bodhisattva who regresses, 'regressing'?" The Blessed One said, "Subhuti, a Bodhisattva who does not regress is called 'regressing.' A Bodhisattva who regresses is called 'non-regressing.'" He asked, "Blessed One, for what reason do you call a Bodhisattva who does not regress, 'regressing'? For what reason do you call a Bodhisattva who regresses, 'non-regressing'?" The Blessed One said, "Subhuti, a Bodhisattva who regresses from the level of a Hearer or the level of a Solitary Buddha, that, Subhuti, is a regressing Bodhisattva, and is called a non-regressing Bodhisattva. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva who does not regress from the level of a Hearer or the level of a Solitary Buddha, that, Subhuti, is a non-regressing Bodhisattva, and is called regressing. Subhuti, by these aspects, these ways, and these signs, one should recognize the characteristics of a non-regressing Bodhisattva Mahasattva. A Bodhisattva Mahasattva who possesses these aspects, these ways, and these signs cannot be turned back from the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment by Mara the Evil One. Subhuti, furthermore, a non-regressing Bodhi

The Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, if he wishes, can enter the first dhyana. He enters the second dhyana. He enters the third dhyana. He enters the fourth dhyana. He enters into loving-kindness. He enters into compassion. He enters into joy. He enters into equanimity. He enters into the sphere of infinite space. He enters into the sphere of infinite consciousness. He enters into the sphere of no-thing-at-all. He enters into the sphere of neither-perception-nor-non-perception. He enters into the cessation of feeling and perception. Subhuti, furthermore, if a non-regressing Bodhisattva-Mahasattva wishes, he can enter into the four mindfulnesses. He enters into the four right abandonments. He enters into the four legs of magical power. He enters into the five faculties. He enters into the five powers. He enters into the seven branches of enlightenment. He enters into the eightfold noble path. He enters into the samadhi of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness. He can manifest the five superknowledges. He cultivates familiarity with the cessation of feeling and perception through these four dhyanas, four immeasurables, and four formless absorptions. He cultivates familiarity with the four mindfulnesses. He cultivates familiarity with the four right abandonments. He cultivates familiarity with the four legs of magical power. He cultivates familiarity with the five faculties. He cultivates familiarity with the five powers. He cultivates familiarity with the seven branches of enlightenment. He cultivates familiarity with the eightfold noble path. He also enters into the samadhi of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, but he does not cling to the fruit of dhyana. He does not cling to the fruit of the immeasurables. He does not cling to the fruit of the formless absorptions. He does not cling to the fruit of the cessation of feeling and perception. He does not cling to the fruit of stream-entry. He does not cling to the fruit of once-returning. He does not cling to the fruit of non-returning.
