Then, the Blessed One addressed Indra, the Lord of the Gods, saying: "Kauśika, if a son or daughter of good family were to establish the beings of Jambudvipa in the path of the ten virtuous actions, what do you think, Kauśika? Would that son or daughter of good family, through that, have their merit greatly increased?" He replied: "Blessed One, it would be greatly increased! Sugata, it would be greatly increased!" The Blessed One said: "Kauśika, even more so, if someone were to give this Perfection of Wisdom for the purpose of reading, writing, or reciting it, their merit would increase even more. Why is that? Because from this Perfection of Wisdom, sons or daughters of good family learn the undefiled Dharma, and having entered without error, enter and will enter, and having obtained the fruit of stream-entry, obtain and will obtain, and having obtained the fruit of once-returning, obtain and will obtain, and having obtained the fruit of non-returning, obtain and will obtain, and having obtained the state of Arhat, obtain and will obtain, and those of the Pratyekabuddha vehicle, having obtained Pratyekabuddha enlightenment, obtain and will obtain, and those who have correctly entered into Unsurpassed Perfect Complete Enlightenment, having entered the Bodhisattva path without error, enter and will enter, and having attained Unsurpassed Perfect Complete Enlightenment, having realized enlightenment, and will realize enlightenment, thus many vast Dharmas have been taught. Kauśika, what are those vast undefiled Dharmas that have been taught? They are: the Perfection of Generosity, the Perfection of Ethical Conduct, the Perfection of Patience, the Perfection of Diligence, the Perfection of Meditative Concentration, and the Perfection of Wisdom.

Perfection of Wisdom, emptiness of the internal, emptiness of the external, emptiness of the internal and external, emptiness of emptiness, great emptiness, ultimate emptiness, conditioned emptiness, unconditioned emptiness, emptiness beyond extremes, emptiness of beginning and end, emptiness of abandonment, emptiness of inherent nature, emptiness of all dharmas, emptiness of self-characteristic, emptiness of non-apprehension, emptiness of non-entity, emptiness of essential nature, emptiness of non-entity's essential nature, the four mindfulnesses, the four perfect abandonments, the four legs of miraculous power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven branches of enlightenment, the noble eightfold path, the four noble truths, the eight liberations, the nine successive meditative absorptions, the emptiness of the door of liberation, the signlessness, the wishlessness, the six superknowledges, all samadhis, all dharani doors, the ten powers of the Thus-Gone One, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, great loving-kindness, great compassion, great joy, great equanimity, these are the undefiled dharmas, these are extensively taught from the Perfection of Wisdom. Having trained in these, those sons or daughters of good families will also awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, will realize enlightenment, will come to realize enlightenment. Kausika, if one being is placed in the fruit of stream-entry, the merit of that son or daughter of good family will increase much more, not by placing the beings of Jambudvipa on the path of the ten virtuous actions. Why is that? Kausika, because the beings placed on the path of the ten virtuous actions are not completely liberated from the beings of hell, the place of animals, and the world of Yama.

O Kausika, beings established in the fruit of stream-entry are completely liberated from the hells, the realm of animals, and the world of Yama. What need is there to mention those established in the fruit of once-returner, the fruit of non-returner, and the state of an Arhat? O Kausika, if someone were to establish all the beings of Jambudvipa in the fruit of stream-entry, or establish them in the fruit of once-returner, or establish them in the fruit of non-returner, or establish them in the state of an Arhat, it would be better if someone were to establish a single being in perfect enlightenment, for the merit of this person would greatly increase. O Kausika, if a son or daughter of good family were to establish all the beings of Jambudvipa in the fruit of stream-entry, it would be better if another son or daughter of good family were to establish a single being in unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, for the merit of that person would greatly increase. Why is that? Because it is for the sake of the uninterrupted continuation of the Buddha's lineage.
